A 102-year-old woman has shared her tips for living a long and healthy life – from avoiding all packaged foods to consuming two glasses of wine a week.
Pearl Taylor, from Dayton, Ohio, became a viral social media sensation after her granddaughter, Taylor Bernal, started recording videos of her dishing out some of the wisdom she’s learned throughout her 102 years and uploading them to TikTok.
Pearl has opened up about everything from how she keeps her skin so smooth to the strict diet and exercise routine that she has used for decades, which she believes have all contributed to her longevity.
But the great-grandmother insists that the most important thing one can do to live longer is to ‘love themselves.’
‘Grandma, what is the secret to living a long and healthy life?’ Taylor asked in one of her videos, which got more than 900,000 views.
‘Love,’ replied the 102-year-old. ‘I really love myself. I think most people have a problem because they don’t think of themselves.
‘They think of everything out there. You have got to think about yourself first. Help yourself first.’
Pearl explained that if you ‘feel good about yourself,’ it will trickle over into all other parts of your life, adding, ‘It has to come from you.’
Another thing that she thinks is vital is to keep a ‘positive’ mindset even if things go wrong.
‘The mind is very, very powerful. Positive thinking is very important,’ she continued. ‘You can’t dwell on problems. It’s not good.’
She also stressed the importance of ‘therapy’ and ‘getting help’ if you need it.
‘We do need that, it’s hard to do it on your own,’ she continued. ‘I’m so grateful I had people who could give me that information [growing up], it has helped me a lot.’
In another video, Taylor asked her grandmother what her secret was to having ‘flawless’ skin – and she revealed that it all comes down to eating healthy.
‘Well, my diet [is a big factor]. I make a green juice, which is aloe vera, celery, kale, ginger, parsley, water, and sweetener,’ she explained.
She also adds one teaspoon of Amazing Grace’s Greens Blend – a powder described as a ‘smoothie mix for boosting energy,’ which comes with ‘organic spirulina, chlorella, beet root powder, digestive enzymes, and probiotics.’
While chatting with Insider about her grandma’s newfound internet stardom, Taylor explained that Pearl has always been about ‘living life to the fullest,’ and that she’s ‘in awe’ of all the attention she’s received.
Pearl, who grew up in Jamaica and previously worked in a factory, told the outlet: ‘I guess I have a lot of life lessons to share.’
The 102-year-old explained that she hasn’t ‘eaten anything out of a package’ in ‘years.’
And while she will have meat occasionally, her diet consists mostly of natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables.
Some of her favorite dishes include chopped papaya and banana, pancakes made from quinoa, flaxseed, and powdered rice, and Jamaican-style rice and beans.
Another thing that she believes has contributed to her long life is consuming tons of liquids.
Every day, she told the publication that she will drink at least two 16-ounce bottles of mineral water and some zero-calorie Gatorade for electrolytes, as well as one decaffeinated cup of coffee. She also takes probiotics.
‘I have a great digestive system and never burp or get a stomachache or headache,’ she shared.
While she is strict about what she puts in her body, she allows herself to let loose by drinking a glass of red wine twice a week.
‘It helps manifest happiness,’ she said.
In addition to eating healthy, staying active is just as important to Pearl.
She gets her steps in when she goes shopping, and she partakes in at-home exercises on the days that she stays in.
‘Walmart is a giant store, and I will walk around it for two hours every weekend,’ she explained.
‘[For my home exercises], I raise my leg and hold it there for four of five seconds. I do that 10 times on each leg.’
She also does deep breathing meditation every day, which she said ‘relaxes her and gets rid of any pain.’
The 102-year-old also loves to take long bubble baths, and she adds olive oil and Epsom salt to keep her skin ‘nourished and smooth.’
While Pearl is very knowledgeable thanks to her many life experiences, she still loves to learn new things.
She said she’s an avid watcher of the news and loves to research new countries that she never got to travel to.
‘I’m always seeking information,’ she told Insider.
In the end, she’s thankful for her ‘excellent life’ and is happy that she can ‘pass on her advice to others.’
‘I’ve had an excellent life, filled with fun and great friendships,’ she gushed in a TikTok video.
‘I’ve attracted the nicest people in my life and I’ve enjoyed life so much. Now, I pass it on to others.’
