WEST JORDAN — A 13-year-old boy was hit and killed by a vehicle in West Jordan on Thursday in what police are describing as a tragic accident.

The collision happened early Thursday morning before sunrise on Redwood Road between 7300 and 7400 South, according to West Jordan Police Sgt. JC Holt. Holt said the boy was running across Redwood in dark clothing, likely on the way to school, when he was struck. He was not at a crosswalk.

The boy was transported to the hospital where he died, Holt said.

“Everybody that was there and involved was cooperative,” he said, adding that it does not appear at this time that any charges will be pursued against the driver. He said the driver tried to “take some evasive maneuvers,” but it was too late.

“It just appears that it was a very tragic circumstance and just an accident.”

Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf said crisis counseling has been made available to students at West Jordan Middle School following the accident. “Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this very difficult time,” Riesgraf said.

Police have not released the boy’s name. Holt at first told KSL the boy was 12, but later clarified that he was 13.
