A £9 bottle of supermarket wine has been voted the UK’s favourite.

Subscription service Wine List spoke to 4,500 wine lovers from across the UK, to find out their favourite supermarket wines.     

Taking the top spot was 19 Crimes Red, an Australian red blend from a brand that collaborates with celebrities including Snoop Dogg for trendy bottles.

The reviewers highlighted it’s rich red colour, and dark berry pallet with a smooth finish. 

The moniker is described as a ‘a liquid ode to the past’  and is inspired by the British convicts who were transported to Australia for a life of hard labour from 1778 to 1868.

While 19 Crimes topped the list of favourite brands, the nations favourite wine type is Sauvignon Blanc. 

Whether it’s from New Zealand, South Africa or elsewhere, it’s clear that the UK loves it. 

With over 16 per cent of votes, reviewers raved about it’s fresh flavours and crisp citrus notes. 

Josh Lachkovic, founder of Wine List, told FEMAIL: ‘Industry figures show what has the largest sales overall, but don’t highlight the favourites of those who consider themselves true wine lovers.’

‘Almost everyone shops at supermarkets – even those of us who work in the wine trade. Knowing where the best buys are is important. 

‘That’s why we made it the focus of our wine taster job application. We can’t wait to pick the winner.’

In lockdown,  19 Crimes has grown 149.7 per cent in value and 148 per cent volume in the UK market, while it’s also become the UK’s Top 10 Best Performing Australian Wine Brand according to Nielsen Scantrack, who also name it the UK’s number one millennial wine brand.

 Provence rosé

Sales have almost trebled, in line with the trend for pale, dry styles of rosé during the summer months. In particular, premium Provence rosé has been among the best-selling lines.

Cabernet Franc 

Lighter styles of red are trending, and are ideal for chilled serves during the summer months. Cabernet Franc volumes are up 70 per cent.

 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 

It’s been trending for quite some time; and sales have continued to surge (+25 per cent) during lockdown.

English wine

 As Bibdensum continue to work with an increasing number of domestic producers, English wine sales are up 44 per cent, led by sparkling. Part of the wider ‘local’ trend, 46 per cent of consumers are more likely to buy locally sourced products now compared to before lockdown.

Globally, it’s become the fourth most admired wine brand in the world, according to Drinks International 2020.

The job application – which states no-one from the trade or with wine qualification can enter – has more than  4,500 applicants.
