‘Full credit to Phil, it’s not that easy being married to or the ex-husband of a journalist because of the nature of changes in your life all the time’ the 45-year-old told the publication.

‘I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to call Phil and say “I’ve got to go into the office. I know it’s my night with the kids, [but] I have to host a special show. How soon can you be here?”

‘He just has to drop his entire life and go, “Okay, I can be there in 40 minutes.” That’s been great for me but also for our kids because they see that Mum and Dad respect each other, and our vibe is that we’re still a family even though Mum and Dad don’t live together,’ she continued.

‘The message is always we’re family, we’re a team. So we try really hard to model that behaviour. Of course if it were perfect, we wouldn’t be divorced. So we try to keep arguments and disagreements on the quiet and not affect our children with that’.

The former 7.30 host revealed in a lengthy Harper’s Bazaar column in 2018 how her life changed following the separation.

‘The view of my life was not the same as from where I had set out. Things didn’t seem as safe as they once had. My sense of security had been lost,’ she wrote.

Leigh separated from Phil during the 2016 Christmas period, 18 months after experiencing what she describes as ‘the worst year’ of her life.

The split followed a difficult period for the couple, which began in 2014 when Leigh suffered a uterine rupture during the premature birth of their youngest son James.

‘I turned to writing to help me process what had happened to me and that has become my third book, Any Ordinary Day,’ she explained.

Leigh claimed she researched how the human brain processed trauma for her new book and learnt a lot about herself as a person in the process.

‘People are able to endure extraordinary things and find joy once again. The things you think you could never survive you probably would,’ she wrote.

News of Leigh’s separation from her husband came after Phil dropped a series of potential clues on Twitter in late 2016.

On more than one occasion, Phil alluded to enduring a miserable 2016.

The pair have two sons – Oscar Willis, 10, and James Christopher Willis, eight.
