Japanese dance group Chibi Unity and magician Anna DeGuzman advanced to the finals on America’s Got Talent on Wednesday during a results episode on NBC.
Chibi Unity members hugged each other excitedly when they heard they were advancing to the season 18 finals.
‘Congratulations because you were brilliant last night,’ said franchise creator and Simon Cowell, 63.
The Group Golben Buzzer winners bowed to the judges and promised that they would do something special for the finals.
Anna, who cried when she made the top five, was all smiles when host Terry Crews, 55, announced she made the finals with her cardistry act, which is the close-up art of manipulating playing cards.
Heidi Klum, 50, told Anna, 24, after her performance on Tuesday’s episode that she was a trailblazer for women in magic.
‘Anna congratulations, as Heidi said yesterday we need more women magicians,’ Howie Mandel, 67, told her.
‘I think the next greatest magician is going to be a woman!’ Anna said.
Shadow Ace, who grew up with no electricity in the Philippines so he entertained himself by making shadow puppets, also made it to the top three before he was eliminated.
AGT season 17 top three finalist Drake Milligan, 25, returned to the show to perform his new song I Got A Problem. The crowd cheered for him when he finished.
‘Amazing, amazing. Drake I want to congratulate you for everything you have done after the show,’ Simon said. ‘We always said that you were going to be a real superstar and you are. And what a great song.’
Drake said he would always come back for Simon. Simon then announced they were launching a new show bringing back the best ever contestants so hopefully ‘we will be seeing each other again soon.’
At the start of the one-hour results episode, Terry shared that one of the members of Chibi Unity had badly injured his knee performing on Tuesday when he caught his foot on the flagpole coming down from a jump.
The show played back the footage of the accident.
‘It is a torn ligament in his knee and that is painful,’ Terry said.
Group member Kitaro returned to the stage in crutches and said he was good. Terry told him that everyone wishes him a speedy recovery.
D’Corey Johnson, a 11-year-old singer from Louisville, Kentucky, and Zion Clark, a disabled gymnast, also made it into the top five before they were eliminated.
Simon said he was so happy that Zion made the top five.
‘Last night that was a sensational performance,’ Simon said. ‘You really, really deserve this.’
Puppet Simon and the Cowgirls, a puppet act with a puppet of Simon; Singer Roland Abante, who works as a fisherman in the Philippines and sings karaoke; Maria Andrea, a 15-year-old dancer from Mexico, who had performed in front of a wall of fire; Orlando Leyba, a stand-up comic from Miami; the Freedom Singers, a singing group from Skid Row in Los Angeles; and country singer Kylie Frey who was called a ‘manic mess’ by Simon were all also eliminated.
Terry unveiled a Sonic ‘Tot’ seat that he said was made entirely of tater tots. He asked if there was a judge who would volunteer to sit on it and Simon pointed to Sofia.
Sofia walked to the stage and sat in the seat and was then hooked up to a lie detector.
‘What could they possibly ask me that they need a lie detector?’ Sofia said.
Simon read questions that fans had written in and the first was ‘is Simon always right?’
‘Yes,’ Sofia said.
But the lie detector said that she was not telling the truth. Howie then asked Sofia who was the smartest judge.
‘Howie,’ Sofia said.
‘That is true,’ said Wendy, who operated the lie detector.
Heidi’s question was why are so many people afraid of Simon and whether he was just a sweet little puppy dog.
Sofia said yes but the lie detector said that was ‘not true.’ Simon then decided to ask Sofia his own question.
‘Who would you push off a cliff – me or Howie,’ Simon asked.
‘Howie,’ Sofia said.
‘That’s not true,’ Wendy said.
‘That’s it, I’m not playing this game,’ Simon said.
‘This woman is ruining everything for me,’ Sofia said, pointing to Wendy. ‘Like, if I get fired it’s your fault.’
‘Do you prefer working on AGT or on Modern Family?’ Simon asked and Sofia said AGT. Wendy said ‘that is true.’
Howie then asked Sofia if she saw anyone in the audience that she was interested in after recently splitting from husband Joe Manganiello, 46, after seven years of marriage.
While men in the audience tried to gain her attention, Sofia ripped off the lie detector and refused to answer any more questions.
Howie has been ribbing Sofia since she announced her split in July by making jokes about her new relationship status.
The comedian has since told DailyMail.com that the brunette bombshell has ‘got a good sense of humor about it’ and is ‘always the first one to laugh.’
Howie added: ‘I would not do it if I felt in any way that I would be offending her even in the slightest.’
Speaking about how she has taken jokes about her love life in her stride, he revealed: ‘She’s just a funny person… She’s probably – all kidding aside – one of the smartest, funniest people that I have met.
‘Everybody’s got a really good sense of humor on this, but she knows what she’s doing, and she’s got a really good sense of humor.’
He continued: ‘And even though I’m getting in trouble a little bit online for digging at her circumstances right now, she’s always the first one to laugh.
‘And I know her really well and she isn’t offended, and I’m not defending myself. I’m just telling you who she is.’
Howie came under fire for the joke he made last month during the first live performance episode of America’s Got Talent.
The split was not discussed in detail during the episode, but Howie had been discussing a performance by 12-year-old magician and ventriloquist Brynn Cummings – where she tried to find a new mate for her rabbit puppet in the performance – when he cracked a joke.
‘If I have one word of advice, if you’re looking for eligible bachelors, you should have talked to Sofia because she’s in the market right now,’ Howie quipped, referring to her recent split.
There was a brief pause as Sofia looked down at the table before she appeared to brush it off – raising her arms and screaming, ‘Yes,’ with a laugh before host Terry said: ‘No we’re not doing that here.’
America’s Got Talent will return next Tuesday on NBC.
