ALISON BOSHOFF: Harrow-educated Benedict Cumberbatch to play Peasants’ Revolt leader in new film The Hood

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play one of the leaders of the Peasants’ Revolt.

The 46-year-old actor, who gets terribly cross about people constantly bringing up his privileged upbringing (Harrow, since you ask), will star in The Hood for director Paul Greengrass.

The Revolt was led in 1381 by revolutionary Wat Tyler, who ended up with his head on a spike.

Benedict has been a busy bee recently.

He has just finished shooting a new TV mini-series of John Buchan’s classic novel The 39 Steps, and a film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar (he plays the title character). Both will be out on Netflix next year.

It follows reports in July that Benedict made an eye-watering £240,000 by posing for 3,000 photos with fans at a 2017 convention.

His earnings at the London Film and Comic Convention could have been even higher with fans at the two-day event forking out £85 for an autograph and £25 to hear him talk to an audience along with £75 for a selfie.

The following year some fans complained at the high prices being charged by former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi at London Comic-Con.

He touted £75 for an autograph and £65 for a photograph with him.

Talent manager Jonathan Shalit said: ‘Comic-Con has really made fan events massive around the world.

‘People involved can sit at a table and make a lot of money – in excess of £10,000 in a day.’

The Sherlock star’s roles in Hollywood films such as The Power Of The Dog and the Avengers series have built him an estimated £30 million fortune.

Exciting: He has just finished shooting a new mini-series of John Buchan's The 39 Steps, and a film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar (pictured in May 2022)
