A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a pregnant woman in Paterson on Thursday.
Donqua Thomas, a Paterson resident, was arrested on Saturday, Paterson police and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Thomas is accused of shooting a 31-year-old woman, who officials only identify by the initials R.L., shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, in the Brooks-Sloate Terrace apartments on Christina Place in Paterson.
R.L., who was eight months pregnant, was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. R.L. delivered her child at the hospital, before dying from the gunshot wounds. Officials say the baby is healthy and remains in the hospital in stable condition.
Officials said that Thomas waited in a vehicle for more than an hour and a half near R.L.’s residence before she arrived. When R.L. did arrive, officials said, she parked next to Thomas and exited her car. Thomas then shot her multiple times and drove off, according to officials.
Police previously said the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, and that the suspect was the baby’s father. Thomas surrendered himself to Paterson police on Saturday afternoon.
Thomas has been charged with first degree murder and three second degree weapons charges. The murder charge brings a possible sentence of 30 years to life in prison, while each of the weapons charges carries a possible five to 10 year sentence. Officials said the state intends to file a motion for pre-trial detention.
Paterson has seen 24 shooting deaths so far this year, according to NorthJersey.com.
