Research has found that the average settee has been the location for 311 arguments and 316 drink spillages.

Settees also provide comfort for 400 naps and are clawed by cats and other pets 488 times. The study of 2,000 adults found the typical couch will be subjected to 65 scribbles by children and will see men sleep on it 269 times after a row with partners or a drunken night out.

The research, commissioned by furniture giant Sofology, showed Britons are willing to shell out an average £1,010 for their dream sofa.

However, a total of 71 per cent have bought, or would consider buying, a second-hand version.

An earlier study showed that an estimated £155million is lost down the back of British sofas each year.
