BAFTA: Ana de Armas, Austin Butler and Paul Mescal nominated

BAFTA nominations 2023: Ana de Armas, Austin Butler and Paul Mescal are among the stars receiving their first ever nods

  • The BAFTAs will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on February 19 

The BAFTA nominations were announced on Thursday and 14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories received their first BAFTA Film nod.

Ana de Armas, 34, Austin Butler, 31, and Paul Mescal, 26, were among the first time nominees for their work in Blonde, Elvis and Aftersun respectively.

The nominations were announced by Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh on Thursday, ahead of next month’s ceremony for the 76th annual film awards set to be hosted by actor Richard E Grant and TV presenter Alison Hammond.

The BAFTAs will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on February 19. 

Blonde is a fictionalized chronicle of the inner life of Marilyn Monroe.

Elvis tells the life story of American music icon Elvis Presley, from his childhood to becoming a rock and movie star in the 1950s while maintaining a complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

Aftersun tells the story of a girl called Sophie, played by Frankie Corio, who is reflecting on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. 

Moreover, Angela Bassett has also received a nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,  Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Brendan Fraser for The Whale and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

In the Best Director category, four of the six are first time Director nominees

The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on The Western Front lead the nominations for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards. 

The EE BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Sunday 19 February at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and will be broadcast in the UK from 19:00 – 21:00 on BBC1 and iPlayer, and syndicated globally.

Film critic Ali Plumb and presenter Vick Hope will host the red carpet pre show on @BAFTA. 

For the first time, the ceremony will reveal the final four category winners live on the show, enabling audiences at home to be part of the excitement as it happens.
