Choose a breathable fabric

Summers can be short in many locations, but often unbearable to enjoy when it’s too hot and humid and you’re on your way to the office and not the beach.

Fabric selection is very important to staying cool in a suit.

‘Mind the fineness of the weave and fabric weight, and always opt for natural fibers for maximum breathability,’ said Dean.

It’s the way the cloth is woven that determines breathability. Open weave cottons, seersucker, silk and rayon are all good options.

‘Linen is a summertime staple, but you must embrace the wrinkles and folds that come with. It’s a more casual look.

‘For a summer event, consider wool-linen blends that are less prone to creasing but equally lightweight.’

Classic-with-a-twist

Dean’s top tip for looking sharp when you’re feeling sweaty will surprise you.

‘It may seem counterintuitive but buy a three-piece suit,’ revealed Dean.

‘If you’ve got the matching vest for your suit, then you are set to take your jacket off and still look pulled together.’

In the most dire situations (like on a New York City subway platform) removing the jacket may be a necessity.

Just fold the jacket neatly over your forearm and roll your sleeves up.

Deep blues, grays and black absorb more heat from the sun than lighter colors, so swap out dark colors for lighter, happier shades

As the warmer weather brings a more relaxed and colorful spirit, it's a good time to introduce pink, khaki and tan into your wardrobe

For a bolder look, red, yellow and cobalt will make sure you stay cool and stand out.

Slip into the right pair of shoes (sans socks)

To start the sunny season on the right foot, Dean suggests a polished Oxford that can take you from important meetings to special events.

On the weekends, ‘A soft loafer will elevate your look above that of sneakers – no matter how strong your sneaker game,’ he said.

Whether you’re running errands, attending a rooftop party or going for brunch, a loafer appears chic no matter the activity.

Unless you are wearing a tie, Dean suggests ditching socks.

‘To go sockless, invest in shoes with leather insoles and cedar shoe trees to help your shoes recover after wearing.’

Shade and protect yourself

A pair of designer sunglasses is the one investment that adds serious cool points to all your casual basics and protects your eyes from damaging UV rays.

A hat also provides instant shade to your head, ears, face and neck.

‘Assuming we have moved past baseball hats here, my advice is to enlist the support of a professional to get the right shape for your face and the right size for your head,’ said Dean.

‘Not all hats are for all men, not all men are for hats.’

Lose the tie

‘For all but the most formal occasions, ties are no longer required,’ revealed Dean.

Adding: ‘Don’t forget the pocket square for a little color and interest.’
