President Biden’s job approval rating plunged 7 percentage points — to the lowest level of his presidency so far — amid the chaotic evacuation of US military forces and American civilians from Afghanistan, according to a new poll.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey, conducted Monday, found that 46 percent of Americans approved of Biden’s performance — the lowest of the weekly polls taken since Biden entered the White House in January.
A similar poll published last Friday showed Biden with a 53 percent approval rating.
The dramatic drop in popularity came as images showed the Taliban sweeping into the capital city of Kabul over the weekend and scores of Afghans desperate to flee the country swarming Hamid Karzai International Airport.
The rapid takeover of Afghanistan by Taliban fighters and the collapse of Afghan security forces, despite billions in dollars and training from the US, brought an embarrassing end to America’s 20 years of engagement in the country.
The debacle in Afghanistan is also shaking Americans’ feelings about pulling out of the country.
Meanwhile, just 49 percent of Americans now support the withdrawal, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll taken over the weekend, compared to 69 percent in April.
Support for pulling out fell along partisan lines, with 69 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of Republicans supporting leaving.
But 38 percent of Democrats and 14 percent of Republicans said the evacuation is going well.
According to the Reuters/Ipsos survey, 75 percent supported the Bush administration’s decision to send in more troops to secure the airport and other facilities until the withdraw is completed.
Asked whether they thought the war would end badly “no matter when the US left,” 68 percent said they “total[ly] agree” and 18 percent said they “total[ly] disagree.”
Forty-seven percent of Americans said the Biden administration did a “good” job managing its involvement in Afghanistan, compared to 51 percent who said the same about the Trump and Obama administrations.
The Biden administration got a 44 percent “good” rating.
