Brown shot to stardom with the release of his 2019 debut single, the country-rap hit The Git Up.

The music video saw Brown performing a line dance with members of a small town.

Brown’s combination of country and trap went viral on the app TikTok, where people recreated his dance moves or added their own dances and tagged it to #TheGitUpChallenge.

The song spent 12 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and reached number 14 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart.

He released his BBR Music Group debut album Honeysuckle & Lightning Bugs last year.

The Git Up has drawn comparisons to Little Nas X’s hit track Old Town Road, which also blends rap and country.

Brown took advantage of the momentum Old Town Road created to release The Git Up in 2019.

‘I called the label president and said, “I don’t want to be looked at someone who put out his record after it started dying down. I want to get in the thick of things. I feel like my record is strong,”‘ he told Time.

‘The album had been mixed and mastered over a year. I did The Git Up in September of last year—and Old Town Road blew up in March. I definitely called the president of the label and said, “We gotta put this out now.”

Brown had ‘no idea’ the song would resonate with listeners the way it did.

‘When I released the video of me dancing, it wasn’t loaded up on iTunes or anything. We had no idea it was going to go viral so fast. We just had a video that had a lot of views and a Soundcloud link that had a lot of clicks. But we had nothing to show.

‘Now, I’m feeling so blessed. I wouldn’t change it for nothing in the world. Just to see people doing the dance and being so full of joy—it just brings me the most peace to my sanity.’
