Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has been discharged from hospital after being treated for coronavirus.
The actor confirmed last month that he had tested positive for Covid-19, and was later admitted to hospital with hisson Abhishek, who also contracted the illness.
Abhishek’s wife, Aishwarya Bachchan, and their eight-year-old daughter Aaradhya also had positive tests.
Now Amitabh, 77, has confirmed that he has left hospital after testing negative, thanking fans for their support as well as the staff at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote: ‘I have tested CoVid – have been discharged. I am back home in solitary quarantine.
‘Grace of the Almight, blessings of Ma Babuji, prayers & duas of near & fear & friends fans EF .. and the excellent care and nursing at Nanavati made it possible for me to see this day [sic].’
Abhishek, 44, also confirmed the news on social media, but revealed that unlike his father, he still has coronavirus and will remain in hospital.
‘My father, thankfully, has tested negative on his latest Covid-19 test and has been discharged from the hospital,’ he stated.
‘I, Unfortunately due to some comorbidities remain Covid-19 positive and remain in hospital.
‘Again, thank you for all your continued wishes and prayers for my family. Very humbled and indebted.’
He added: ‘I’ll beat this and come back healthier! Promise.’
Earlier this week, he confirmed his wife and their daughter had also been discharged after testing negative.
He said: ‘Aishwarya and Aaradhya have thankfully tested negative and have been discharged from the hospital. They will now be at home.’
India is currently seeing an increase in coronavirus cases, with the country recording more than 50,000 new cases for the fourth day in a row.
The worst affected state is Maharashtra, home to the capital Mumbai, but there has also been rising numbers in areas including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Assam.
Amitabh is one of Bollywood’s best-known actors, having made his acting debut in 1969. He has featured in motion pictures including Black, The Wall and Don.
His daughter-in-law Aishwarya has also found her own success in the Indian film industry, after winning the Miss World pageant in 1994.
She has since starred in successful Bollywood films such as Jeans, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Kandukondian Kandukondain.
Meanwhile, her husband Abhiskek, who she tied the knot with in 2007, has appeared in movies including Doom, Sarkar and Guru.
