The boxing ring almost saw history repeat itself as rising star Edgar Berlanga almost took a bite out of Roamer Alexis Angulo’s ear during a bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The moment, caught by television cameras was reminiscent of Evander Holyfield’s 1997 fight against Mike Tyson in one of the most bizarre fights in boxing history, as Tyson bit off a part of Holyfield’s ear.

In Saturday night’s fight, Berlanga, a NABO super middleweight champion, who had racked up 16 consecutive first-round KO wins at the start of his career, was struggling against Angulo.

In the seventh round, Berlanga could then be seen trying to bite Angulo’s neck and then his left ear.

Angulo immediately moved his head back and threw his arms in the air and put his gloves to his ear and in attempt to show the referee what happened.

‘He was throwing elbows. I was about to do a Mike Tyson on him,’ Berlanga stated. ‘He kept throwing his elbows, and I didn’t want to get cut.’

Incredibly, Berlanga did not receive a penalty with the referee either not seeing the attempted bite or simply ignoring it. Instead, he warned Angulo for punching behind the head.

In Mike Tyson’s incident, he was disqualified for going for Holyfied’s ear twice.  He also lost his boxing license, although it was later reinstated.

Berlanga who was seen bleeding from his nose early on in the fight and from his mouth towards the end.

‘I just got the experience I needed. Once again, my power is still there. I hurt him a couple of times. I didn’t want to fall for any traps or anything. I knew he was a tough guy,’ Berlanga said.

On Sunday, Berlanga apologized for his comments on social media.

‘I want to apologize for my actions and what I said yesterday about the Mike Tyson bite. I was in the moment and got a little ahead of myself. It doesn’t take away from the embarrassment that I have caused upon myself, my team, top ranks, and many others,’ he wrote in a tweet.

‘I reacted poorly and take full responsibility. Moving forward, I am going to be more mindful and encouraging in my behavior. Once again, I do apologize.’
