A 13 year old boy was killed and his toddler brother is fighting for his life after a car being driven by their mother was struck by a speeding hit-and-run driver.

The LAPD are still searching for the male driver that hit them, who ran away on foot after the car he was driving went up in flames.

Chris Amaya-Pineda, 13, his sister Jade, 16, and little brother Damian, two, were on their way to their grandmother’s house with their mother Debbie, 35, when their car was hit by a Mercedes that had run a red light.

The crash happened just before 8am, after which all four victims were taken to Harbor UCLA medical center.

Chris was pronounced dead on arrival and his brother is now fighting for his life, the LAPD have said.

Their mother was initially admitted to an ICU but was moved to a recovery room on Wednesday. Jade was able to return home with only minor injuries.

The crash happened at 7.55am on January 9 in the area of Main Street and 111th Place, just two blocks from the family’s home.

A silver 4-door Mercedes sedan was speeding south along Main Street when it struck the family’s SUV, the LAPD said in a statement. The impact sent their car across the curb and into a parked car.

The Mercedes struck two parked cars before catching fire. The suspect, who is believed to have suffered serious injuries, then fled without making any attempt to help any of the family members.

Police said on Monday that the 13-year-old and his little brother needed CPR after going into cardiac arrest.

‘I remember when I woke up, my body was really sore and they had told me that my brother passed and that my mom was going to be okay,’ sister Jade told KTLA 5.

‘I know my brother wouldn’t want me to feel sad, so I’m trying to be strong for him,’ she added.

‘He was really kind. I need people to keep praying for my little brother because I really need him to survive and I can’t lose another brother.’

A witness told NBCLA that the Mercedes ran a red light through the intersection.

The driver seemed remorseful but then took off, the witness said. ‘I’ve never seen somebody so heartless – to take off and leave like that,’ she said in tears.

A GoFundMe page was set up by Debbie’s sister in the hopes of raising money to cover the funeral costs.

‘Funeral costs possibly for two people instead of one, medical expenses for 4 individuals, physical therapy in the coming months, loss of vehicle, rebuilding and reestablishing their families spiritual foundation and solidarity as they try to restore what they have,’ she wrote.

‘If there’s a miracle, doctors are saying he’ll most likely be paralyzed,’ Julie Amaya, Chris’ aunt told KTLA regarding Damian. ‘He will not be the same little Damian that was before.’

LAPD is asking witnesses to contact the department to help with identifying a suspect.

‘He has to take accountability for what he did,’ said Julie Amaya. ‘The family is torn. Just think of what you want for someone to do for you. Just please, just help us. We’re asking for help.’
