A Brazilian woman is facing embezzlement charges after she conned her family and friends into believing she had breast cancer who then gave her cash donations.

Camila Barbosa, 27, told relatives in early 2022 that she had been diagnosed with cancer after was admitted to the hospital for dengue fever, according to news outlet G1.

A relative who spoke to the outlet said that Barbosa told her family that doctors at the medical facility wanted to intubate her, but that she refused to allow them.

They said: ‘She said that the doctors said they wanted to intubate her, but she said that she did not authorize it and that she signed a (document) denying authorization.

‘But when the doctor came by, a relative who was there asked him about it and he said that he had nothing like that, that she was fine and that she was already discharged from the ICU and that he would send her (home).’

Barbosa went on to tell her loved ones that aside from the breast cancer detection, doctors also discovered a malignant growth in her intestine and lung. 

Whenever someone would suggest that she seek a second opinion from a doctor they were recommending, she would often decline their guidance and say that she was already undergoing chemotherapy.

The family unearthed Barbosa’s lies after one of her relatives followed her to Araújo Jorge Cancer Hospital and spotted her sitting in the cafeteria. 

The family member was able to confirm that she was not a patient and that she had been busted on multiple occasions for taking pictures at the treatment center during a chemotherapy session.

Barbosa regularly posted photos of her bogus cancer battle on her social media accounts, including images of herself lying on a bed pretending to be in the process of a treatment session.

She also took to social media to share a video of the moment she had her hair shaven off her head.

Police learned of Barbosa’s scam after 10 people, including former boyfriends, came forward January 11 and filed a report claiming she had swindled about 20,000 reals ($3,800) in donations.

Barbosa told authorities she had been cured from cancer several years ago, but that the disease had returned and spread to her intestine and lung after she was diagnosed with dengue.

In addition, she claimed that the treatment had been paused after the hospital misplaced her medical file.

Authorities searched her home and found hospital documents which didn’t support her cancer claims.

‘She did an MRI from the skull to the rectum,’ the family member said. ‘The only thing that shows in this exam is that she has gastritis, which is a very common disease. I saw the report. I don’t know what goes through her head.’
