A teenager fighting for life in hospital after the car he was in hit a pole and burst into flames had only recently lost his father in tragic circumstances.

Tyson Brehm, 15, is one of three teenagers being treated in hospital after the allegedly stolen Mazda CX-9 he was in left the road at Brightview, west of Brisbane, about 6am on Tuesday.

The other occupants Cassie Battison, 17, and a boy, 15, who is understood to be Cassie’s brother, were also seriously injured in the crash.

Emergency crews said the car was attempting to overtake a truck when it left the road, struck a pole and burst into a fireball.

It is understood the teenagers were either thrown or pulled from the vehicle by witnesses before it caught alight.

Tyson’s hospital battle comes less than two years after his dad committed suicide in the family home.

A GoFundMe set up to pay for Tyson’s dad’s funeral revealed he took his own life on New Year’s Eve in 2020, leaving his wife, six children and two grandchildren behind.

‘The passing of our father/husband has affected us a lot, our family home wont ever feel like home again. My younger sister refuses to come home because of what has happened,’ Tyson’s sister Hayley wrote on the fundraiser.

‘Dad’s death is gunna (sic) have a huge impact on our lives, has broken all our hearts.’

Hayley said her mum and dad had been together for 23 years and the widow now faced raising her six kids alone.

‘He was much loved… adored his grandchildren and would often watch them so we could go shopping… (this) has broken all our hearts,’ she said.

Tyson was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with the other 15-year-old boy after the crash, while Ms Battinson was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The three teenagers are being treated for head, limb and abdominal injuries.

Ms Battinson was in a critical condition but is believed to have now stablised.

Angeline Martin, an off-duty nurse, who lives next door to where the car crashed was one of the first on the scene.

She said the teenagers were conscious but confused.

‘When I got to the scene, the car started to burn… (it) completely burst into a big flame,’ she told The Courier Mail.

‘If the farmers were not here, I think one or two (children) would have gone up in flames.

‘The girl, I put her on my lap, and she was asking for her brother.’

Police said the Mazda CX-9 was reported stolen from Clayfield in Brisbane’s north on Monday night.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and police have asked for anyone who might have information connected to the crash to contact them.
