Brooke Satchwell reveals how she landed a role on Neighbours with no acting experience

Brooke Satchwell reveals how she landed a role on Neighbours with ‘no experience’ – and how her mother tried to protect her at the start of her career

She rose to fame in 1996 when she was cast as Anne Wilkinson on Neighbours.

And almost three decades later, Brooke Satchwell says she is ‘forever thankful’ to have landed her breakthrough role with no acting experience.

Speaking at the premiere of her new Foxtel series The Twelve last week, Brooke, 41, said the Aussie soap was a ‘critical stepping stone’ in her career.

‘It was literally off the school bus into the public consciousness, like it was huge,’ she said of joining Neighbours as a teenager.

‘I remember when the opportunity presented itself, my family had no experience whatsoever in this industry.’

Brooke recalled how once she was offered the role of Anne, her mother Jane called a woman from the Actors Advisory Board to ask what they should do.

‘Somehow I don’t know [if it was] the White Pages, but my mum found her and rang her and said, “What do I do? Do I let my daughter take this opportunity?”

‘And it’s been oft-repeated – it’s going to end up on a fridge magnet or something – but my mum always reminds me that she said, “[Neighbours] will give her the chance to have opportunities not just dreams.” And it certainly has.’

Brooke said it felt remarkable that a new chapter of her career – landing her role in The Twelve – was just beginning while the show on which she started her journey, Neighbours, was drawing to a close.

‘It’s immensely sad to be losing such an incredible training ground for both cast and crew and a part of our culture,’ she said of Neighbours’ cancellation.

Brooke shot to fame at the tender age of 16, playing Anne Wilkinson on the soap.

She won a Logie for Best New Talent, and stayed on the show for four years before defecting to hit crime drama Water Rats.
