A 36-year-old woman was taken to hospital in Brooklyn on Tuesday after a shooting outside a school which was initially believed to be an attack by the father of her child, but now may be considered a suicide attempt.

The unnamed woman was found on a bench outside JHS 278 in Marine Park at around 4pm, police said.

She had been shot in the head. 

A man was taken away in an ambulance, strapped to a gurney and screaming. It was unclear whether he was connected to the shooting, and if so, how.

A young girl was seen being comforted by a NYPD officer.

Michael Kemper, the assistant chief of NYPD, said ‘there is indication’ the shooting ‘could have potentially been a suicide attempt,’ according to The New York Post.

The woman was taken to Brookdale University Hospital, where her condition was critical, police said.

A student at the school said: ‘They put us basically in lockdown, and we couldn’t go anywhere other than the auditorium.

‘And we were stuck in there for a few hours, and our parents couldn’t do anything about it.

‘It was kind of scary. At first I didn’t know what was going on.’

The boy said he did not see any police activity.

He said he thought the basketball team was outside practicing at the time of the shooting. 

The boy said other students told him ‘it wasn’t a drill’.
