The Project’s last remaining original host, Carrie Bickmore, is finally saying goodbye on Wednesday night after 13 years at the helm.

The beloved TV presenter, 41, fought back tears as she told viewers last month that it was the hardest decision she has had to make in her professional life.

The Gold Logie winner has been on The Project desk since the program launched in 2009 and has since become a familiar face on Australian screens.

‘I have some news that I wanted to share… s*** I’m already crying,’ she began.

‘I have made the tough decision to finish up hosting the show at the end of the year,’ she continued through tears.

‘It’s been the hardest decision of my professional life, to make this call, but it’s time for a new challenge and for my next chapter.’

Bickmore said she was going to miss her ‘mates on the desk’ and the ‘wonderful viewers’ who have supported the show for over a decade.

‘It’s no secret that this show has become a second home to me, and I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone that has been involved on and off screen,’ she said.

‘It has been a long journey. I started the show when Ollie, my son, was one, and he’s now 15, which is crazy. And I want to spend more time at home,’ she added.

Whether she made us laugh, cry, or think deeper about current events, here, Daily Mail Australia takes a look at some of Carrie’s most memorable moments on our screens.

While she regained her composure, it was incredibly difficult not to feel for her as she relived the trauma for her family.

In 2021, Carrie and guest host Kate Langbroek were brought to tears after presenting a segment on a child with cancer.

Carrie openly sobbed, covering her face, after discussing three-year-old Melbourne boy Oli, who is suffering from stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

‘You will will do anything for your kids, won’t you,’ Carrie said, becoming tearful.

Carrie reached for Kate’s hand during the exchange, both women clinging to one another and fighting tears.

As the show went to an ad break, Carrie gasped out a sob, saying ‘sorry’ before fully breaking down, tears streaming down her face.

Defending Grace Tame

In January, Carrie unleashed on Peter van Onselen after he labelled Grace Tame ‘immature’ for the frosty reception she gave the Prime Minister.

Bickmore and guest Remeikis, who is a sexual assault survivor herself, took issue with his comments and questioned why Tame needed to act a certain way.

Bickmore then asked van Onselen why he felt he needed to tell Tame to act in a certain way and to smile during a ‘catastrophe’.

The Project panelist then asked why should Tame be silenced and not able to attend the morning tea to which van Onselen said ‘if you can’t show basic courtesy I think it’s immature’.

‘You spoke about how she acted as a child, you know when she should have been able to act as a child? When she was a child. But she was preyed upon by a man and lost part of herself in that,’ Bickmore fired back.

In the aftermath of the tense interview, Twitter erupted with many rushing to the support of Bickmore and Remeikis.

Rude slip of the tongue

Carrie’s most famous on-screen gaffe took place in 2012, when she accidentally said the C-word during a segment about a price war between Qantas and Virgin Australia.

‘Virgin’s targeting key corporate routes hoping to win over C***-tas, excuse me, Qantas customers,’ she said before laughing.

Without missing a beat, Carrie’s then co-host Charlie Pickering quipped: ‘That address you’ll need is YouTube.com.’

Carrie later took to Twitter with an apology, writing: ‘Any publicity is good publicity right??!! Sorry @qantasairways and my nan.’

Carrie takes a tumble

Carrie was similarly left red-faced in 2013 when she dramatically toppled over during a live cross into the studio.

Nearby camera crew were seen frantically helping Carrie get back onto her feet as her co-hosts broke into hysterical laughter.

The term ‘Carrie Stackmore’ began to trend on social media after the incident occurred, with Carrie Tweeting after the show: ”What just happened then. Seriously!!!!! How embarrassing! Maybe it’s best I stay seated when on tv! #totallyunco’

Awkward celebrity interviews

Back in 2019, Carrie famously suffered a particularly embarrassing on-air moment while interviewing singer Michael Bublé.

Flirtatious Carrie left Michael looking slightly bewildered as she confessed to having a huge ‘crush’ on him before revealing he was her ‘celebrity hall pass’.

To make matters worse, Carrie was forced to re-watch the awkward segment during a subsequent interview with Michael in 2018.

In 2013, Carrie also powered through an extremely awkward live interview with Sex Pistol rocker, Johnny ‘Rotten’ Lydon.

During the interview Johnny lashed out at Carrie, shouting: ‘Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Now listen, when a man is talking do not interrupt.’

In 2015, the popular presenter made another slip-up during a discussion about Ruby Rose’s naked shower scene in hit TV show Orange is the New Black.

‘She’s cocky, she’s flirty and she’s super funny. This is the sexiest season by far,’ said Carrie.

Carrie then used the word ‘beaver’ to segue into her next segment, which was about an area called Beaver Dam in Wisconsin, where a woman was campaigning to push for her pet joey to enter a McDonald’s restaurant.

‘But speaking of being naked in the shower, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin: the rules have changed there on what animals are allowed in restaurants,’ she said.

Soon after, she made a slip of the tongue that caused the panel and audience to erupt in fits of laughter.

In 2021, Carrie suffered a faux pas during an interview with Orange Is The New Black star, Yael Stone, 34.

Despite Carrie’s warm interview style, the veteran broadcaster got off to a tough start on her very first question to the Australian actress.

‘At one point it was the most watched show on Netflix. How are you feeling about it coming to an end?’ Carrie asked, before Yael quickly pulled her up on the backhanded compliment.

‘I guess I’m a bit sad that you said ‘at one point’. I guess I didn’t know it wasn’t anymore,’ Yael said, with nervous laughter erupting from the audience.

She continued: ‘So I feel a bit sad, almost instantaneously about that.’

Appearing to be nervous that she offended the Hollywood star, Carrie said: ‘Ok, let’s just remove that. Start again.’
