Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown injured on same fourth quarter play in Boston’s loss to Portland – MassLive.com

It was about as bad a moment as the Celtics could have envisioned. With less than a minute left Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown collided trying to make a play in the final minute of Boston’s loss to Portland and both ended up limping to the locker room.

On the sideline in front of the Celtics’ bench, Norman Powell caught an inbounds pass. His right foot landed on Brown’s right foot as Brown tried to steal the ball with 40 seconds left. Jayson Tatum was hustling over to either foul or trap. The first collision pushed Brown onto Tatum’s right foot.

Both Celtics’ stars crashed to the floor holding their ankles. Brown, who had a previous right ankle injury that made him questionable before the game Sunday, appeared to get the worst of it. He had to be helped to the locker room.

Tatum was able to put weight on his and walk off under his own power, but he too went to the locker room to seek medical attention while Portland put the final touches on its 129-119 win.

Tatum wasn’t initially on the Celtics’ postgame media conference list because of the injury, but he was healthy enough to be added to it and expressed optimism.

“We just collided. He stepped on my foot and fell on my leg,” Tatum said. “It should be all right. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow. It should be O.K. I was able to walk off the court by myself. That was a good sign.”

That left the Celtics without their top four scorers to end the game as Kemba Walker didn’t dress with an oblique injury and Marcus Smart had been ejected.

Brad Stevens, who spoke before Tatum, said it was too early for a status update on Tatum and Brown in his postgame video conference with the media.

“I don’t have any update on them. Other than they were both in different rooms being looked at,” said Stevens, who later added. “We’ll take tomorrow off, practice Tuesday and go from there. We’ll obviously have more of an update on how everybody’s feeling then. The initial look, when I looked at it with my uneducated eye, I would say they certainly weren’t swollen or anything like that. That can happen overnight. We’ll see how that plays over the next couple of days. I’ll have more information on Tuesday.”

The Celtics have the next two days off before playing at Orlando Wednesday.
