The 36-year-old actor, who played Nate Archibald on popular teen drama series, said he was shocked by the big reveal in the finale that Dan Humphrey was indeed Gossip Girl.

Dan was portrayed by actor Penn Badgley in the series, who has since gone on to star in the show You on Netflix

Appearing on The Project this week, Chace said: ‘I think I was like, “Dan was Gossip Girl? Like what, what are you talking about?”

He added: ‘I think the fans did say that [they thought] Nate was Gossip Girl, anything would have made more sense than Dan being Gossip Girl.’

Throughout the hit series, which followed the lives of rich American teens in New York’s Upper East Side, an eponymous gossip blogger [Gossip Girl] created havoc for the titular characters.

The show followed the lives of best friends Blair Waldorf [Leighton Meester] and Serena van der Woodsen [Blake Lively], and the finale saw Dan Humphrey being revealed as ‘Gossip Girl’.

Penn recently said he had a hard time filming the finale and saying the titular character Gossip Girl was ‘dead’.

‘I could not keep it together,’ he previously told Esquire.

‘Something came over me and I just couldn’t say it. I kept laughing. I couldn’t stop. I was sweating. I was having an out-of-body experience.’

He agreed with Chace that the big finale reveal didn’t make sense to them.

‘At the end of Gossip Girl the show, whatever your reaction is on whether it was smart to do that or not, that he’s Gossip Girl — it didn’t really line up with the character of Dan. Right? Chace said.

‘Yeah,’ Penn replied.
