Chris Evans’ most outrageous stunts on TFI Friday as he’s slammed for weighing Victoria Beckham

Fat shaming, making children cry, mocking the public with ‘Freak or Unique’ and Geri Halliwell and Kylie Minogue’s kiss: A look at Chris Evans’ most outrageous stunts on TFI Friday as he’s slammed for weighing Victoria Beckham on live TV

  • TFI Friday was a nineties hit but some of its segments have now dated badly
  • Ugly Bloke, Freak or Unique and child staring battle would never be made today
  • This week Victoria Beckham hit out at post-birth weighing on Channel 4 show

With its mix of live music, megawatt celebrity guests and Chris Evans as host, TFI Friday was must-watch appointment viewing for most in its Nineties heyday.

But in the modern era some of the content on the hit Channel Four show has been cast in a different light – and is difficult to square with contemporary attitudes.

Yesterday Evans – 56 –  was slammed by Victoria Beckham for asking her to weigh herself on live television shortly after giving birth.

It is one of many outrageous moments that made the show so popular, but would no doubt be left on the editing room floor today.

Here MailOnline looks at the most famous and controversial examples:

Making children cry on television

One of the programme’s most controversial segments was where children were told to compete in a staring competition to win amazing prizes.

In one of the contests two boys aged seven took part, with the loser looking tearful when he missed out on a new car for his mother and father.

The next week it was the turn of two young girls who were competing for a £15,000 speedboat.

This the time the loser burst into tears, prompting further complaints to industry watchdog Ofcom.

The ITC reprimanded Channel 4 for breaching its Programme Code which says ‘care must be taken to avoid causing distress or alarm to children’.

A 2015 reboot went some way to repair the outrage as the losing pair Chris and Naomi were invited back grown up for another match.

This time they did not have to win and they were both given holidays to Barbados.

Kylie Minogue and Geri Halliwell arm-wrestle then kiss

The show had always managed to get some of music’s biggest stars to do things out of their comfort zone.

But perhaps one of the most famous was not even planned, it is thought.

Evans had convinced Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and Kylie Minogue to battle each other in a contest of strength.

Using the show’s famous desk the pair arm-wrestled, with the competition ending in a stalemate.

Then they leant in to kiss each other and proceeded to do so for around two seconds.

After it happened it was claimed that the moment had not been planned.

Fat lookalikes

Another section of the show was Fat Lookalikes, which was exactly how it sounded.

Members of the public or friends of TFI Friday would nominate themselves to go onto the segment.

It was then up to viewers to try and work out which famous person they believed they bore a resemblance to.

The reveal of the celebrity’s name would then appear in front of the contributor.

Inevitably the live audience would whoop and cheer with delight.

Freak or unique

Freak or Unique was a platform for fans of TFI Friday endowed with unusual abilities.

Years before Britain’s Got Talent graced ITV screens, the section featured bizarre talents or bodily features.

The guests would come on and tell Evans and the audience what their talent was.

Some of the most famous included a woman who was able to cry milk and a man who could fire ball bearings from their belly buttons.

The most memorable is widely accepted to be the lad who had rubbery ears.

Ugly bloke

This self-explanatory section included members of the public who had written in to appear on the show as an ‘Ugly bloke’.

Evans would ask them about themselves at one point quizzing ‘How long have you been ugly?’ – they replied ‘All my life’.

Then a smoke belching backstage door would open and model Catalina Guirado would appear.

She would then proposition the guest before the segment would end the same way.

The so-called Ugly Bloke would reply ‘No thanks love, you’re not my type’.

Weighing Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has criticised TFI Friday an Chris Evans over a moment where he weighed her after she gave birth to her first child.

It happened in 1999 and was just two months after she had delivered her son Brooklyn.

Evans had asked her how she had got back into her usual shape so quickly after the birth.

When she responded she was back to her normal weight he asked if he could check and got her to step on some scales.

Victoria told a forthcoming edition of Vogue Australia: ‘He made me stand on the scales to be weighed.

‘Can you imagine doing that nowadays?’

Known for his lewd behaviour in the Nineties, TV presenter Chris Evans has now been slammed by Victoria Beckham for forcing her to weigh herself on live television shortly after giving birth.

The extraordinary incident happened on Evans’s Channel 4 show TFI Friday in 1999, two months after the then Spice Girls singer had given birth to Brooklyn, her first child with England captain David Beckham.

Evans told her: ‘A lot of girls want to know, because you look fantastic again, how did you get back to your shape after birth?’

After replying that she was actually really lazy and hadn’t been to the gym at all, the host wouldn’t let up, demanding: ‘Is your weight back to normal?’

When she said it was, he persisted: ‘Can I check, do you mind?’ before getting her to step on to some scales and remarking: ‘Eight stone’s not bad at all, is it?’

The fashion designer now says: ‘I went on a TV show with Chris Evans many years ago and I’d just had Brooklyn and lost a lot of weight after.

‘It happened to my mum after her pregnancies. It doesn’t mean you have an eating disorder. And he made me stand on the scales to be weighed. Can you imagine doing that nowadays?’

The former Posh Spice talks about the media obsession with her body shape in the forthcoming edition of Vogue Australia: ‘I’ve had ‘Porky Posh’, I’ve had ‘Skeletal Posh’. After I had Brooklyn, there was a picture pointing to every single part of my body where I had to focus on losing the weight from.’

Evans’s behaviour around the time of the incident has been the subject of much interest.

He was questioned by police in 2016 after a woman alleged that he exposed himself to her on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast. He denied indecent assault and claimed that he was the victim of a witch-hunt.

Evans, 56, recently told listeners of his Virgin Radio show that he planned to bring back TFI Friday later this year. Last night, he could not be reached for comment.

Victoria has come under fire this week from a famous Spanish chef for causing him grief at a celebrity wedding with her ‘complicated’ dinner demands.

Three Michelin star chef Dani Garcia, 46, claimed the Spice Girl had ‘changed the whole menu’ when former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos tied the knot with his model and TV presenter wife Pilar Rubio in Spain in 2019.

Dani recalled how Victoria had coconut water by her ‘all of the time’ as well as bowls of mints, as he branded the habits ‘odd’ in a new interview.

Touching on what it was like to cook for the fashion designer at the June 2019 wedding banquet near Seville, Dani said on Spanish TV on Monday night: ‘It was very strange. Victoria Beckham changed the whole menu.

‘It was very sad because when you make such an effort, not just me and my team but the bride and groom and everyone else to create a unique menu.

‘Hers was totally different and just based around vegetables. And then there were some odd things that I’ve never seen in my life.

‘She had coconut water, all the time, a bowl of mints and then on the other side hydroalcoholic gel which is very famous now but back then wasn’t because the Covid pandemic hadn’t started.

‘It was complicated giving Victoria her menu that night.’

Disputing Dani’s version of events, a source close to Victoria said:

‘This makes a great story but isn’t fair or accurate – the most Victoria would have done when asked about dietary requirements is ask for some plain fish and vegetables.’

Dani, who was awarded his first Michelin star when he was just 25, made his comments about Victoria on a popular evening show called El Hormiguero, which the likes of Justin Bieber and Will Smith have guested on regularly over the years.

It is one of Spain’s most watched prime time programmes in its evening slot on the Antena 3 channel with around 2.5 million viewers.

Victoria’s ‘odd’ eating habits have been the subject of intense scrutiny for years.

No thanks! The mother-of-four has previously revealed she won’t eat food cooked in oil, butter or sauces and doesn’t eat red meat or dairy

During Euro 2004 she reportedly stuck to a diet of strawberries washed down with mineral water.

The mother-of-four has previously revealed she won’t eat food cooked in oil, butter or sauces and doesn’t eat red meat or dairy.

Last year she said her comfort food was whole grain toast with salt on it and admitted: ‘To most restaurants I’m probably their worst nightmare.’

Former England captain David confessed on the River Che Table 4 podcast earlier this year: ‘I get quite emotional about food and wine, when I’m eating something great I want everyone to try it.

‘Unfortunately I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years.

‘Since I met her she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables, she will very rarely deviate from that.’
