Christina Applegate is grateful for SAG Awards nomination after difficult MS diagnosis: ‘I’ve had an incredibly hard year, and today this made me smile’

  • Applegate tweeted her thanks at her nomination on Wednesday
  • She was honored for her Netflix dramedy Dead To Me
  • Applegate announced her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in August 2021
  • She previously had a double mastectomy in 2008
  • Her ovaries and fallopian tubes were also removed in 2018, again due to cancer

Christina Applegate shared her gratitude on Wednesday after being recognized by her peers with a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The 51-year-old actress was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her lead role in Netflix‘s acclaimed series Dead To Me.

She took to Twitter to salute the body and share her thanks for the honor.

‘Thank you @SAGawards for this nomination today! I have been a proud member of this union since 1975,’ she wrote.

But the actress, who revealed her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in August 2021, also referenced to the health struggles she has dealt with recently.

‘I’ve had an incredibly hard year, and today this made me smile,’ she added.

Christina concluded her post with ‘love’ to her ‘peers,’ along with a special shoutout to ‘my sweet Jean Smart’ of Hacks fame, who was also nominated, as well as the ‘other incredible ladies I walk beside.’

She stars in Dead To Me as Jen Harding, a realtor who bonds with a woman named Judy that she meets at a grief counseling meeting (Linda Cardellini) after her husband is killed in a hit-and-run incident.

James Marsden also stars in the dark comedy in two roles, playing Judy’s abusive ex-fiancé in the first season and his brother, who strikes up a relationship with Jen, in the last two seasons.

But Jen’s attempts to move on from her husband’s death are threatened as she learns secrets about Cardellini’s identity and connection to his death.

Back in 2021, Applegate revealed that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis ‘a few months ago.’

‘It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a****** blocks it,’ she wrote at the time.

‘As one of my friends that has MS said, “we wake up and take the indicated action,”‘ she continued. ‘And that’s what I do. So now I ask for privacy. As I go through this thing. Thank you xo.’

According to the National MS Society, the condition is an ‘unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.’

Balance, sensation, the functioning of the arms and legs and even vision can be negatively affected by MS.

However, treatments exist to slow the progression of the condition.

Affected individuals may live five to ten years less than unaffected people, but life expectancies are not drastically different.

The condition is believed to be two to three times as likely to affect women as men.

Although she didn’t share the identity of her friend with MS in her original post, she and the activist and MS advocate Selma Blair are known to be friends, and Blair spoke about their relationship post-diagnosis in November of last year.

‘I’ve known Christina for so many years, we’re really close, and I’m just a fan of hers,’ she told Entertainment Tonight following the Dancing With The Stars finale.

‘She is an iconic California girl actress of my generation, and she is it,’ the Hellboy actress continued. ‘There has not been one thing that she’s done that I haven’t been like, “Nailed it,” and she’s nailing just being who she is with this MS.’

She added that Christina had supported her following her diagnosis in October of 2018.

Last month, during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Christina described shooting the third and final season of Dead To Me after her diagnosis as the ‘hardest thing’ she had ever done.

‘Shooting the show was the hardest thing I’d ever done in my life because I was diagnosed during shooting. I didn’t know what was happening to me,’ she explained.

She had enough trouble walking to set that she had to use a wheelchair, and after she was urged to get checked out and got her diagnosis she started to think back on little signs and symptoms that may have popped up over the previous four years.

”It sucked balls,’ she said of her diagnosis.

Christina has a history about being open about her health struggles so that others can benefit from the exposure.

Back in 2008, she shared that she had undergone double mastectomy surgery for breast cancer.

She opted for the surgery rather than less invasive options in hopes of preventing the cancer from spreading in the future.

‘It came on really fast. It was one of those things that I woke up and it felt so right,’ Applegate told CNN

‘It just seemed like, “I don’t want to have to deal with this again. I don’t want to keep putting that stuff in my body. I just want to be done with this,” and I was just going to let them go.’

A decade later, she revealed that her ovaries and fallopian tubes had been removed, also to reduce her risk of cancer.

Christina Applegate’s ‘tough road ahead’: What is multiple sclerosis (MS) and what are the symptoms?

MS is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.

The immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body.

It’s a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild.

A study of the incidence of MS, developed in conjunction with Public Health England (PHE), estimates that 18% of total MS diagnoses in the UK are in people age 30 or under. This is compared to the previous estimate of only 12%.

There are 130,000 people living with MS in the UK and, in the last year alone, the charity estimates more than 1,250 people under 30 have been diagnosed. It is the most common progressive neurological condition in young people today.

When diagnosed with MS, no one can predict how the condition will affect you, how disabled you will become, or how quickly, and tens of thousands of people still have no treatment to help as their MS advances.
