The annual City2Surf run has been cancelled for the first time in 50 years because of coronavirus restrictions.
The organisers announced on Friday the iconic 14km run from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach ‘will not be possible in 2020’.
‘We remained optimistic over the past few months that a physical City2Surf could be held but unfortunately due to the ongoing restrictions on mass gatherings it’s clear that is no longer possible,’ IRONMAN Group Oceania managing director Dave Beeche said.

Instead, a City2Surf Virtual Run will be held in its place with participants encouraged to run around their own neighbourhood.
‘While it’s disappointing that we won’t have people take to the streets between the city and Bondi it’s great that we’re able to celebrate the 50th running of the City2Surf with a virtual run,’ Mr Beeche said.
The first City2Surf run was held on September 5, 1971.
