Horrified Costa customer films ‘revolting’ flies and ants crawling over festive treats on display in coffee shop

  •  Daniel Renak, 34, visited the branch on Fore Street in Tottenham on Monday
  •  He claims a member of staff told him ‘it doesn’t bother some of our customers’
  • The operations manager said the treats stayed out for another 25-30mins
  • Costa has apologised to Mr Renak saying: ‘incidents like these are unacceptable’

A ‘shocked’ Costa customer filmed what he claims was ‘revolting’ ants and flies crawling over their festive treats – only for staff to allegedly tell him the infestation ‘doesn’t bother’ other customers.

Daniel Renak, 34, had been craving something sweet after his lunch when he ventured into Costa Coffee on Fore Street in Tottenham on Monday.

But Mr Renak, an operations manager from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, was ‘quickly put off’ after claiming to spot some of the chain’s festive range ‘crawling with ants’.

The concerned customer flagged the issue to a member of staff but says he was told ‘it doesn’t bother some of our customers’ and that the manager was already ‘aware’.

After suggesting the staff remove the food, he claims the baristas had ‘no intention’ of throwing it away and it remained on display for 25-30 minutes afterwards.

In a clip posted online, ants and flies appear to crawl over chocolate brownies and tiffin – right next to Costa’s newly-released Christmas treats.

Now Mr Renak has vowed not to return to the café, saying: ‘I had a bit of a craving for some sort of cake at lunch time.

‘I went into Costa and was really quickly put off having anything because it was literally crawling with ants and flies. It was a sign for me not to have one.

‘I spoke to a lady at the counter and made a point. I said: “your display has flies and ants all over it – you need to take this off display”.

‘Her response was: ‘it doesn’t bother some of our customers’.

‘It was literally swarming in it and they just didn’t care. Apparently some customers are okay with that.

‘I did actually ask at that point if there was a manager. I’ve got a background in food anyway and I’m very aware of food hygiene and food safety.

‘I asked to speak to the manager and she said “the manager’s aware”. They’d left the food out and it was out for some time afterwards.’

After realising he was unlikely to get the desired response from the Costa employee, he then went online to flag the issue to the company but claims he had not heard anything more than a day later.

He claims that while staff were performing some cleaning duties, they ‘weren’t bothered’ by the crawling creatures on their food.

Mr Renak said: ‘It was still out for a long time and they had no intention of getting rid of it.

‘They were mopping the floors around it and stuff like that, they were doing some sort of cleaning, but weren’t bothered by the fact there were ants and flies.

‘I didn’t see them sell any of the products while I was still in store.

Mr Renak was disappointed, saying: 'I like my Costa hot chocolates so I'm quite annoyed by it' and has been put off visiting the Fore Street branch in future

‘I just thought there wasn’t any point in continuing the conversation. If she thought that was an acceptable response then we weren’t on the same page.

‘I’ve been going to Costa for a long time and I like my Costa hot chocolates so I’m quite annoyed by it.

‘It’s put me off going to that branch in the future. I know there are various franchises and stuff so one manager’s idea of hygiene might be different to another’s.

‘I haven’t heard a thing from Costa. I don’t normally put those sorts of things up [online] but I was so shocked by it I just thought it’d provoke a bit of a response.’

A Costa Coffee spokesman said: ‘At Costa Coffee we take food hygiene extremely seriously and incidents like these are unacceptable.

‘We have robust cleaning and hygiene procedures in place and our franchise partner, who owns and operates the store, have taken immediate action. We have responded to the customer to apologise for their experience.’
