Couple spends £32k renovating two flats into ONE dream home

A thrifty couple have embarked on a mammoth project to convert two separate flats into one dream home by knocking down walls and stripping the property bare.

Ellie Williams and her partner Lloyd, first time home owners from South Wales, purchased both flats in April 2022 with the intention of converting them into one big house.

The extreme DIY task has seen the couple knock down several walls, recover antique features and install a staircase, but have so far only completed two rooms, spending £32,000 in the process.

The pair share videos of the progress on TikTok, where they revealed they bought the flats at a good price, and that the conversion came with off-street parking, a master ensuite bedroom and is fully detached.

The lovebirds have invited others to watch their journey, with one fan calling it ‘goals’. They revealed: ‘We are Ellie and Lloyd and we bought these first two flats as our first home in April 2022 to convert back into one house.

The pair revealed that after living with family and staying child-free, they managed to save up enough money to build the home

Lloyd is pictured taking a break from the long and gruelling project - one the couple have worked on for the last 16 months

‘We knew it was going to be an absolutely massive project when we went to view [the flats], but we knew that we wanted to take it on as well.

‘The main reason for this was [that] it ticked all of the boxes for our non-negotiables. It has a garden, it has parking and it’s detached.’

The couple began the project after several years of struggling to get on the property ladder, but after living with family and staying child-free, they’ve saved up enough money to build their dream home.

But the job has been no easy feat for Ellie and Lloyd who have had their work cut out for them.

This includes renovating the house after long working days, living in the flats as they renovated them and learning how to structurally build each component of the home.

‘We decided to live here during the renovations because we thought that this was going to help us decide what we wanted to do with each space.

‘So far, we’ve completed two rooms – our main bathroom and our spare bedroom’ explained the couple.

The pair took to TikTok to share videos of the progress, where they revealed they bought the flats at a good price, complete with a sizeable loft (The couple are pictured working on the loft conversion)

Speaking on the work in detail, Ellie adds: 'Obviously, the first job that we wanted to do was to install an internal staircase, so we could actually connect the two flats together'

The hard working duo have gotten stuck in to the job, including doing their own knocking and hammering

With so much work before them, Ellie lists 'knowing where to start' as one of the biggest challenges

One of the completed rooms is a stunning modern bathroom, complete with marble walls, a porcelain bathtub and a large shower.

They continued: ‘Our loft conversion master suite is well underway and the open plan kitchen-living-dining area is coming together slowly but surely.

‘Knowing which order to do things in is honestly the hardest thing’.

In another video, fans can see the progress underway on integral parts of the flat, before the couple install a sleek wooden staircase with glass panelling.

The DIYers are also seen hammering and working on a wall, while in another clip, roofers are hooking scaffolding onto the two houses.

Speaking about their huge project, Ellie explained: ‘Obviously, the first job that we wanted to do was to install an internal staircase, so we could actually connect the two flats together and not feel like they were separate dwellings.

‘So, we cut a hole in the bannister, ordered our staircase and this was the first job.

‘After this, we did a lot of internal demolition, including finding this amazing fireplace behind the render, cleaning up and preparing for the rooms to be decorated.

‘Next up, we had the roof replaced. We added solar panels, skylights, steels for the loft and painted the exterior’.

Their diary-style videos have garnered thousands of views and hundreds of comments from users in awe at the large-scale project.
