  • Two other passengers inside the car were only minorly injured in the car crash

The father of a teenage Dominos delivery worker who was killed on the job said his son was just days away from quitting.

Alex Edwards, 18, died in a horror car crash at 9.15 pm on Saturday while on a pizza delivery run on Somerset Drive in Mudgeeraba, on the Gold Coast.

The small Toyota Yaris had crashed into a tree with Alex and two other employees inside.

The two passengers managed to escape the crash with only minor injuries, but Alex died at the scene, just five minutes from his Dominos store.

A Domino’s spokesperson said it is ‘deeply saddened’ by Alex’s sudden death.

‘Alex Edwards joined Domino’s Mudgeeraba just over six months ago as a delivery driver and in that time earned the friendship and respect of his colleagues as a hard-working and valued member of our team,’ they said.

‘We will be providing support to our team members and the family and friends of all involved, including offering counselling services.

‘Domino’s will also provide the local police with all possible assistance with their investigation, and conduct a thorough internal investigation of our own.

‘We would like to express our sincere condolences to Alex’s family and friends and ask that their privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time.’

When asked if the company will be assessing its driver training, the spokesperson said: ‘Domino’s has a comprehensive training and onboarding process, including on making safe deliveries, but we also recognise that training is only one form of the control measure.

‘We have hundreds of team members out on the roads every single day making safe deliveries, and even one incident like this is one too many.’

A woman who lives near the scene of the crash said she heard a woman she believed to be Alex’s mother screaming and crying beside the mangled car.

‘She was just yelling “no, no, no” over and over again,’ the local told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘There was a loud whirring as the boy’s foot was still on the accelerator.

‘I ran inside and called the ambulance and the driver was still alive at that stage.’

Alex’s heartbroken parents were seen at the site of the fatal crash on Monday morning, reading cards left at a makeshift memorial.

‘We never expected anything like this to happen to our baby boy,’ Alex’s father said.

His mother was seen crying while sitting in the grass by the tree and reading a card that said: ‘Long will you be missed. You never failed to put smiles on all our faces’.

A neighbour said she has seen nine car crashes since living on the street.

‘We’ve had cars flip right outside our driveway and we even had a person crash through our fence,’ she said.

Queensland Police are still investigating the crash and urged anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
