‘I’ve got a quarter of my mother inside me!’: Dame Kelly Holmes reveals she accidentally ATE her mum’s ashes when scattering them on a windy day

Dame Kelly Holmes has revealed she accidentally ate her late mother’s ashes when scattering them on a windy day.

The elite sportswoman, 52, shared the story on Tuesday’s episode of Loose Women as she admitted that she could now look back on the moment and laugh.

Dame Kelly was reflecting on her own experience of grief as the nation has been mourning Queen Elizabeth II, who was laid to rest on Monday.

Dame Kelly’s mother Pam Norman passed away in 2017 from myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

The former middle distance runner recalled: ‘My mum wanted to be cremated and if she wasn’t she was coming back to haunt us!

‘There were four main places around the country that she wanted to go, but it was just too late. So we decided we were going to go to these four places and scatter the ashes.

‘Anyway the first time we did it, all my family, I have a large family, were all coming in and getting handfuls [of the ashes] because I’d covered it in a box because we were in a public place, and I don’t think you’re always allowed to do it in a public place, are you?

‘So I had this box, covered with one of my nephew’s jackets, and they were all coming to get a handful and we were sprinkling it like a shake ’em bag!’

While Dame Kelly had no problem scattering her mother’s ashes on the first  occasion, disaster struck on the second, third and fourth outing.

She continued: ‘When we went to the New Forest and to Isle of Wight and to the Cotswalds – every time it was windy.

‘So we’d stand in a long line, we’d throw them… and I’ve got a quarter of my mother inside me!’

As the Loose Women panelists looked shocked, Dame Kelly explained: ‘With the ashes! I swear!

‘Because every time, every time we did it, we’re obviously sad, but every time, we’d go one two three,’ before she mimicked throwing a handful of ashes that then blew back into her face.

Dame Kelly, who won gold in the 800m and 1500m at the Athens Olympics in 2004, said she was extremely close to her mum, who brought her up on a council estate in Kent, and it took a long time for her to accept she was gone.

The athlete’s father, a car mechanic, ran off when she was just one years old, leaving a young Pam to raise her alone.

Yet that wasn’t without its difficulties and, worried there was too much to cope with, Pam’s parents encouraged her to have Kelly adopted.

The athlete spent some time in and out of children’s homes, but throughout it all, Pam was determined not to give her daughter up.

Dame Kelly previously said of her mother’s death: ‘It was the worst day of my life. She was only 17 years older than me so we were very close.

‘It was awful, I suffered bereavement for a long time. It took a lot of time and talking to people, making sure my friends knew I needed them to be around.

‘Every day I long to be able to tell my mum what I have been doing. We used to speak every day.’
