Destroyer director was surprised by Nicole Kidman’s height and had to transform her for gritty film

Nicole Kidman is known for her height, beauty and talent – and she sure can work a red carpet in a designer gown too.

But the 51-year-old was perhaps a tad too graceful for the role of a tough-as-nails cop in the new film Destroyer, at least a first.

The director of the gritty drama, Karyn Kusama, 50, tells The Australian that she was surprised by how tall the Australian star is in person.

‘It sounds surprising, but I’d never anticipated an actor of her height. She’s literally almost most six feet tall, and she has lovely posture,’ the American director says.

That was something for a challenge for the role of battle-weary detective, Erin Bell, in crime drama.

‘Something I had to reorient myself to was the idea that her height could be transformed into something closer to the character.

‘Instead of a regal swan, she could become a bull in a china shop,’ Karyn concluded.

In the R-rated movie, Nicole plays the anti-heroine who is pulled into an old case after the ringleader of a gang she had tried to infiltrate re-emerges.

The Stepford Wives star has revealed she turned to watching footage of wild coyotes in a bid to get inside Erin’s predatory mind.

She also underwent a significant makeover, wearing prosthetics to age her famous face and transform her into the wold-weary cop.

In an interview published in TV Week magazine this week, Nicole told the publication that she struggled to ‘let go’ of the gritty role.

‘I’ve let go of other roles easily, but found it very difficult with her,’ Nicole told the publication at the Australian premiere of the film in February.

The thriller, with it’s scenes of violence and painful emotions, stayed with the actress long after filming ended.

She added: ‘I just never know how much of a hold the character’s going to take on me, but I’m always open − and always trying to stay open so that I can access emotions and access truth.’

Destroyer opens in Australian cinemas on March 21.
