Detroit based mosque leader says ‘wife beating is a reminder she has misbehaved’

A Michigan-based Imam has been filmed informing students on the purpose of ‘wife beating,’ according to a video posted by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

In the brief clip that was uploaded on May 27, Shiite Imam Bassem al-Sheraa speaks to a class at the Az-Zahraa Islamic Center in Detroit.

According to the Washington D.C. based non-profit, the leader asserts that the Quran references a type of beating that does not cause pain and does not leave a red mark.

He continued: [The Prophet] said that the beating is meant to remind her that she has misbehaved in cases when words [of admonishment] do not make her change her ways.

Al-Sheraa then explained how the beating should be similar to that one does when disciplining their child.

‘It is just like when your child reaches to touch the electrical socket or a fire… What do you do? You go like that!,’ he said.

‘It is just like when your child picks up something dangerous and is about to eat it…You hit his hand like that as a reminder. This is a reminder and a means of clarification. This is what the ‘beating’ means.’

In January, MEMRI blasted the religious leader for making Anti-Semitic comments after a video surfaced of another one of his teachings at the Detroit center.

‘He accused the Jews of employing tricks and fraud in matters of religion and morality, and of amassing gold and spreading usury,’ the MEMRI claimed

Explaining that usury is a ‘peculiar Jewish philosophy,’ Imam Al-Sheraa said that the Jews have used it as a means of attaining power, even though it contradicts their religious teachings, and that even the modern banking system is based on the Jews’ ‘instructions and vision.’

Al-Sheera is also said to have claimed that Jewish women have managed brothels in Europe, adding that ‘the Jews allow their faith to be passed down maternally so that their women could increase the Jewish population through prostitution.’

He is said to be a graduate of Najaf Hawza in Iraq.
