Fans of the soap were gripped as cash-strapped Rocky corrupted electrical wiring at the Albert Square landmark in an attempt to claim some much-needed insurance money and consequently pay off his worsening gambling debts.
But the ill-conceived plan went south of the river after blameless Bobby Beale attempted put the fire out, leaving himself, Peter Beale and guilty culprit Rocky injured when the café exploded.
Tuning in on Monday, viewers discovered Rocky had barely suffered a scratch and was free to discharge himself from a local hospital – despite being at the heart of a violent blaze.
But there was no such luck for Bobby, bloody and bruised on a hospital ward, with with a visible scratch on his head as he embraces his panic-stricken father, Ian.
Worse, Peter was comatose and wired up to machines in intensive care having apparently suffered the worst injuries of the three.
But merciless viewers were having none if it, with many questioning why Bobby got off so lightly while Peter was clinging to life, despite both being inside the café when it exploded.
Taking to Reddit, one bemused viewer wrote: ‘Bobby escaping with tiny knock on his head and Peter in a life threatening coma is absolute BS.
A second added: ‘In the real world, Bobby would be dead. No one is surviving that explosion.’
Replying to the post, another Reddit user wrote: ‘Even if they did, with that minimal of an injury is ridiculous.’
Evidently unhappy that Bobby had escaped without mortal injury, another added: ‘The way Bobby just jumped up today and was like “Daaad”.. All chipper and ready to roll with a tiny chicken scratch on his head!? Come on!’
While a fifth posted: ‘Bobby had just tripped the switch then the window beside him shattered with flames coming out right where he was standing. How he got to the other side of the café is beyond me.’
Rocky’s latest storyline precedes his imminent departure, with actor Brian Conley confirming his decision to leave the soap in September.
‘I made my decision for many reasons, this decision, and it’s tough because they’re such a wonderful crowd. In front of the cameras and behind the cameras, I’ve loved my three years there,’ he said.
Conley also took to his Instagram grid to confirm the news and further refuted claims there had been disagreements.
He said in a social media video: ‘Hi it’s me Brian, AKA Rocky from EastEnders. I am just sending out this message to all the fans. You may have heard reports that I am leaving.
‘It was a tough decision but it is true that I am going, I made it for many reasons that decision. It was tough as they are such a wonderful crowd in front and behind the cameras and I have loved my three years there.
‘That is the truth. There are reports that I clashed and that I was ranting, but I’m not ranting. I have gone with their blessings the Beeb and I am excited about the future and where it’s going to go and I am excited about Rocky’s exit because it’s good!
‘So I am sending you much love to all EastEnders fans and enough said!’
