Police say the gunmen approached a group playing basketball and began shooting at them unprovoked before fleeing the scene.

While speaking to reporters at the scene MDPD detective Angel Rodriguez made a plea to the public to stop the violence, WSVN reports.

‘This is a senseless, heinous crime. There were adults, children, families, trying to share and trying to have a good time at a park on a Sunday before returning to school on Monday,’ he said.

He encouraged people who may have any information which could help with their enquiries to get in contact.

Two people on stretchers were seen being placed into ambulances, with six of the victims said to be in a critical condition.

Crime scene investigations have been underway with officers seen labelling casings left at the scene.

Ages and descriptions of the victims have not been released while police continue to investigate the incident.

Those with information about the attack or where the gunmen are should contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

Elsewhere that same evening, four people were injured when another shooting took place in Allapattah .

The victims are said to be in a stable condition after they were taken to hospital.

It is not clear if the two shootings were connected.
