Emmerdale will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with an hour-long weekend special – as the village is terrorised by a deadly storm in the soap’s biggest stunt EVER
Emmerdale will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with an hour-long special on Sunday 16th October.
The soap, which will mark half a century to the day since its first episode was broadcast in 1972, will air a rare weekend episode featuring its biggest stunt in history, as the village is tormented by a deadly storm.
To mark the news, Emmerdale bosses released a new snap of the soap’s huge cast on Thursday, as a slew of characters prepare to take centre stage in the anniversary scenes.
Exciting: Emmerdale will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with an hour-long special on Sunday 16th October, with bosses marking the news by releasing a new cast snap on Thursday
The cast snap, which included the longest-serving stars, younger actors and even the Dingle dog, posed for the image outside the famous Woolpack pub.
As Emmerdale prepares to mark 50 years on screen, fans have been given a tease of the scenes that will unfold, centering around an unexpected storm that hits the village and leaves many lives hanging in the balance.
Producer Kate Brooks also confirmed that the 50th Anniversary will see the return of several familiar faces to the Dales, including Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle), Elizabeth Estensen (Diane Sugden) and Amy Walsh (Tracy Metcalfe).
Scary: Hearkening back to a historic storyline when the village was hit by a tornado, viewers will be gripped as the village is hit by another deadly storm in the anniversary scenes
Speaking to The Mirror about the explosive scenes last month, Kate said: ‘ ‘A massive storm will rip through the village and leave a trail of destruction in its wake. Some of our best-loved villagers will be in peril. The village will literally never be the same again.
‘We also have the return of some very familiar faces to the Dales. Diane, Aaron and Tracy will all be making a re-appearance, albeit on a temporary basis, but at the heart of some really big stories.’
Danny bid farewell to Emmerdale last year after 13 years as Aaron Dingle, opting to leave the village after his boyfriend Ben Tucker’s (Simon Lennon) death.

Meanwhile Amy left the village in 2021 when she went on maternity leave, with her character Tracy accepting a new job in Nottingham.
This isn’t the first time Emmerdale has been hit by disaster, after a tornado in 2003 killed the beloved Tricia Dingle, and a plane crash in 1993 killed off four major characters.
Despite comparisons to the Noughties tragedy – nicknamed Emmer-gale – Kate insisted that this disaster will be different.
She added: ‘It’s in daytime, so you can actually see what’s happening. It affects the entire village – and some people are seriously injured, so I think it will feel really different.’

Kate went onto hint that bosses haven’t ruled out a murder during their Anniversary month, which will kick off with Kim Tate overhearing her fiancée Will Taylor declaring his love for another woman on their wedding day.
Recent weeks have also seen Leyla Harding struggling with her cocaine addiction, with her husband Liam discovering her unconscious following an overdose, while Marlon Dingle has struggled with a lengthy recovery after suffering a stroke.
ITV have also announced that they will air a special documentary to mark Emmerdale’s 50th birthday, featuring classic clips looking back at some of the soap’s most heart-warming, emotional and dramatic moments.
Emmerdale’s 50th Anniversary Special will air on Sunday October 16 on ITV.
