Standing in front of family and friends, Tamara said: ‘Having a sister is like having the best friend possible. They are always here for you and see things the same way you do.

‘They understand all your thoughts without you having to explain and no matter what you do they can’t get rid of you.

‘Although Petra and I are very different, we have always been there for each other.

‘I’m not sure that Petra knows this but she was a very, very lucky baby. When I found out that I was going to be a big sister to a new baby, I prayed every night for a baby sister.

‘And it was a good thing that she was a girl because I vowed that if the baby was a boy I was going to put him in the washing machine.

.Growing up we were inseparable. Petra put up with me and all of my brilliant ideas.

‘There was a time that I wanted to learn a little more about home hair experiment. And, after some extensive experiments with a bottle of sun-in, we had to cut all of Petra’s hair off. Luckily after a while it grew back.’

Finishing off her speech, Tamara gushed: ‘So to my incredible sister, my loyal, thoughtful, passionate little sister and to her new husband who we welcome into our family today, I would like to raise a toast.

‘To adventures, to love and to soulmates. To the very happy couple: Petra and Sam.’

And while Tamara gave a speech, her eldest daughter, eight, looked like a princess as she served as flower girl to her auntie.

She wore a stunning white dress, with a lacy bodice and a tiered net skirt, while carrying a silk basket of flowers.

Tamara and husband Jay Rutland’s other daughter Serena, eighteen months, also served as a flower girl on the big day, in an adorable miniature version of Sophia’s white dress.

Tamara looked sensational in a glittering gold gown, with an asymmetrical neckline and a daringly high slit.

Jay cut a dashing figure in a black suit, complete with white shirt and black bow tie, with flower pinned to his lapel.

Attendees gathered in the Georgian mansion’s landscaped gardens – the largest in London’s Kensington and Chelsea borough – to watch the ceremony and the newlyweds were met with claps and cheers as they made their vows to the strains of a string quartet.

Guests were able to select from pomodoro pasta or risotto and sea bass fillet or chicken milanese, before they were served ice cream dessert and coffee to follow. The food came from from Ms Ecclestone’s favourite restaurant, C in Mayfair.

Friends at the nuptials described the day as ‘small and intimate’ – a deliberate contrast to Petra’s ostentatious £12 million wedding to her first husband James Stunt in Italy in August 2011.

Tycoon Mr Ecclestone, 91, who learned last week that he would be charged with tax fraud, was not spotted entering the property but friends said that he gave his daughter away.
