The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought fans plenty of superhero action over the years that it’s been on screen. Avengers: Endgame seemingly wrapped up 22 of the franchise’s films serving fans many tearful moments.
By the time the three-hour film wrapped up, viewers couldn’t help but wipe away their teary faces after having to say goodbye to one of the most prominent characters in the MCU, Tony Stark. Iron Man, however, wasn’t the only character who fans had to say goodbye to.
Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone that defeated Thanos.
Who is Natasha Romanoff in the MCU?
Natasha Romanoff is a fictional character created by the late Stan Lee. Black Widow is said to be resistant to any diseases or aging, which makes her almost indestructible. She is known for her flexibility and agility, as well as her great intellect.
Natasha was first introduced to viewers as a Russian spy against Iron Man. She later joined the secret agency S.H.I.E.L.D under the leadership of Nick Fury. She then joined the Avengers, often fighting alongside them until her demise in Avengers: Endgame.
Scarlett Johansson has played Natasha Romanoff for ten years. The 35-year-old actress plays Black Widow in the upcoming titular film. The film Black Widow was set to be released in May 2020 but got delayed to November due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Why Did Natasha Sacrifice Herself in the Avengers: Endgame?
Fans never understood why Natasha sacrificed herself in exchange for the Soul Stone. As Scarlett Johansson states, however, fans will soon get a decent chance to close the curtains on Natasha without any dangling threads.
The solo film, according to Johansson, will give Natasha’s ending a satisfying conclusion. Black Widow happens way before the events in Endgame or Infinity War, giving fans a complete glimpse into Natasha’s journey in the MCU.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johansson stated that Natasha decided to give up her life instead of letting Hawkeye do so.
Hawkeye and Natasha have enjoyed a solid friendship over the years, and it was heartwarming watching her make such a sacrifice for her friend and the world.
Natasha’s death paves the way for MCU’s phase 4 in which fans will get to see a new set of characters, including a new Black Widow, Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh.
Why the Avengers Couldn’t Bring Natasha Back
Fans on Reddit have been speculating and trying to poke holes into the logic put up by the MCU, where Gamora was brought back after her death in Infinity War. Gamora died by Thanos’ hand in Infinity War after he sacrificed her to get the Soul Stone, which he used to wipe away half of humanity.
According to Insider, Red Skull, the protector of the Soul Stone, made it clear that whoever gives their life for the stone cannot in any way be brought back. When Hawkeye returned without Natasha, his fellow Avengers demanded answers. However, Hawkeye told Thor to ask Red Skull if he had any further questions about the statement.
The Gamora in Endgame, however, is the one from before the events before Infinity War. Bruce Banner mentioned that he had tried bringing Natasha back by snapping his fingers, but a ‘force’ stopped him. It should be noted that Banner was informed by the Ancient One that once the Avengers use the Infinity Stones to fix the damage done by Thanos, they should return the stones to when they were removed.
The Ancient One stated that failure to put them back would open terrible alternate realities. It can be assumed that bringing back Natasha could alter the timeline, thus opening up ‘Pandora’s box’ in the process.
