A raunchy new show dubbed the UK’s answer to Sex and the City premieres tonight with scenes of naked dancing, shower sex and lots of drug taking.

Everything I Know About Love, which is very loosely based on podcaster Dolly Alderton’s memoir by the same name, will air tonight on BBC One, although some keen fans have already started the series on iPlayer.

Set in 2012, it tells the story of Maggie (played by Emma Appleton) a 24-year-old who has just arrived in London and is moving into a house share with her three best friends.

The first episode sees the four 20-something housemates  (joining Maggie is Bel Powley as Birdy, Marli Siu as Nell and Aliyah Odoffin  as Amara) navigate their lives in London including awkward first dates and risky romps.

Set the scene: The story is set in a 2012 London house-share with flashbacks to suburban adolescence in the early noughties, the series is an unflinching deep dive into bad dates, heartaches and humiliations and begs the question: can platonic love survive romantic love as we grow up?

It also sees them take cocaine, casually drop the C-word and speak about their frequent drug use. ‘Doing poppers in Camden is like eating croissants in Paris, everyone does it,’ quips Maggie.

‘No taking the batteries out the TV remote for your dildo’ Nell later demands.

‘Is it hard being the prettiest girl in the entire world?’ Maggie asks Birdy at one point.

The first episode see the foursome set off for their ‘first Friday night in their first London house’ as they enjoy a wild night of partying.

Later Birdy tells a group of strangers how Maggie is her ‘childhood sweetheart’ and the pair are seen in flashback in the infancy of their now strong friendship.

Much like Sex and the City is a love letter to New York, Everything I Know About Love is a homage to London.

A story about love: It was announced last year that Dolly's book would be the inspiration for a seven part drama about best friends Maggie (Emma) and her best friend Birdy (Bel), and a glimpse at the hotly-anticipated drama has already been revealed

There are a lot more scenes involving drunkenness and cups of tea than the cult noughties hit,  and the outfits certainly look less high-end but the tumultuous relationships between the four friends we follow mirror those of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.

As the girls are seen settling into their life in London, they roll down Primrose Hill – with the famous skyline behind them.

In the opening scenes, Maggie meets a musician on a train called Street, she later dates him and sets up her best friend Birdy on a date with his flatmate.

Birdy pre-prepares topics for her romantic outing.  ‘Council tax?’ Maggie wonders as she reads the list ‘ Russel Brand?’.

Later in the episode,  after a failed attempt at a hook-up with Street, she gets home, strips down to a pair of knickers and dances naked through the house while smoking a cigarette.

She then barges in on Birdy, hoping she joins the fun, but she’s caught in bed with her date, as a nude Maggie desperately attempts to cover herself from the surprise visitor.

The trailer also shows how the girls’ friendship is then seen to change as Birdy begins a relationship her best friend is left feeling rejected.

‘People only say nothing wont changes when things are changing’ a sad Maggie cries – as she eats a large block of cheese in bed.

As Birdy settles down in a happy relationship Maggie exclaims: ‘Everyone is so boring, sorry but I want to live before I die’.

Crashing her pals romantic evening with a large sombrero and an inflatable penis.

The girls are then seen making love and exploring their maturity as Amara says: ‘We’re in this short grubby phase of life that’s so short lived’.

With the main character’s friendship reaching breaking point Maggie cries: ‘You’ve always been my most important person’.

Only for a tearful Birdy to reply:  ‘I don’t know if we should be that to each other anymore’.

Fun: The pair are then seen heading off on a girls night out with pals Nell (Marli Siu) and Amara (Aliyah Odoffin).

Maggie is romantic and open-hearted and desperate to find lasting love, while Birdy is nervy and convinced she’ll never get a man. But when she does within a few weeks of their move to London, it puts a huge strain on the girls’ friendship.

‘The most important element for me was the central drama of two best girlfriends who’d grown up together, and seeing their story as a romance,’ says Dolly. ‘We look at the ups and downs of their relationship through the same lens as you would a romantic comedy.

‘Everyone remembers what it’s like to have your heart broken. Everyone knows what it’s like to lose someone close to you who you thought you’d spend your life with.’

Emma, best known for Netflix fantasy series The Witcher, says the show is about the excitement of independence and the blows that can come with it. ‘Maggie’s been desperately excited to have the freedom of being in her 20s since she was young,’ she says.

‘She had this template about what it was going to look like; the milestones she’d pass like settling down and having children.

‘But this series is about how it isn’t always like that. Growing up can be different to how you imagined it.

‘Maggie’s doing something we’ve all had to do, which is trying to figure out life when things don’t go to plan. The show is a reminder that friendships can also be the great loves of your life, and you have to work on them.’

Bel, who played British assistant Claire Conway in Apple’s hit series The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, believes the show will appeal to Sex And The City fans, but also to a younger generation who may not have even seen it.

‘There aren’t many shows about women for women, and I think it mainly works because so many of us are desperate for it,’ she says. ‘There hasn’t been a show like this on British television before.’

Maggie and Birdy share the flat with two university friends, calming influence Amara (Aliyah Odoffin) and teacher Nell (Marli Siu), who’s not afraid to discipline her flatmates.

‘They’re this girl gang I wanted to capture,’ says Dolly. ‘This sense of women coming together, being enmeshed in each other’s lives, being naughty and mischievous.’

To that end, be prepared for some raunchiness as each of the girls falls in and out of love.

‘There are quite a lot of sex scenes, but they weren’t difficult to film because we had a brilliant intimacy coach,’ says Bel. ‘It still felt like a bit of a thing though.’

The show is being directed by China Moo-Young (Intergalactic, Harlots) and produced by Working Title Television (We Are Lady Parts, Hanna).
