Fashion: Ageless Style

Wardrobe staples for everyone by fashion director Shelly Vella

Giving classic pieces a fresh twist is a great way to update your wardrobe. Take a simple fine-striped shirt, for example. This looks crisp teamed with tailoring and laidback worn loose with linen trousers. Or, for a thoroughly modern take, wear it clashed with a bolder-striped bottom half. Cropped, wide-leg trousers are perfect for this combo, which looks as effortless worn weekend-casual with flats as it does dressed up with heels.

1. Don’t be shy of coloured stripes – they are a great way to marry in accessories of a similar hue such as this crossbody bag (which converts to a clutch for evening).

2.  Cropped trousers are a modern alternative to skirts and show off a little ankle and a fun shoe. Proportion is key, though, as if cut too wide they can look clown-like, cut too slim and your hips will be accentuated.

3. For a bold accessory try oversized glasses frames. Tortoiseshell styles look great with everything, but if you prefer a pop of colour, make sure it goes with your favoured wardrobe palette.

 4. A high-waist cut on a cropped design gives the illusion of longer legs, especially on a more petite frame. Look for styles with a great belt detail that, when cinched, accentuates your middle.

Swap the shirt for a form-fitting top such as a bodysuit or skinny knit to balance out a pear shape.

Go for wrap-tie sandals if you’re self-conscious about your ankles – try simpler styles such as low-heeled courts or peep-toe sandals instead.
