Square Enix currently has a bunch of ongoing projects for the next-gen platforms, especially for PS5: Project Athia from the developers of Final Fantasy XV, the second part for Final Fantasy VII Remake, and reportedly, Final Fantasy XVI which has entered into the full-development process recently.

First of all, it doesn’t sound like anything new for those who follow the industry news constantly. As may remember, it was already rumored before Sony’s June event that Square Enix might reveal the next entry in the Final Fantasy series for PS5, but it didn’t happen and the Japanese publisher unveiled Project Athia as a brand new IP.

With Sony presenting another showcase this week, the rumors around Final Fantasy 16 has been ignited again, but this time around, with more precious clues. The most important reference to Final Fantasy XVI‘s announcement is a recently created Twitter account with the same name registered by Square Enix.

Later on, after Sony officially announced its 40-minute showcase around PS5 titles for September 16, the announcement tweet has been retweeted by Shinji Hashimoto, the brand manager for the Final Fantasy series and the producer behind many Final Fantasy games including FF XV. Reportedly, he tends to retweet the events that his games would make an appearance there.

Last but not least, the team behind Final Fantasy XIV recently revealed that they have finished the pre-production process for their new project and that they were hiring new developers for this unannounced game which is highly rumored to be Final Fantasy XVI.

On September 16, Sony’s next PS5 showcase will reveal some new games for the console, while providing more update on the already announced next-gen games. The event is also expected to reveal the release date and price for PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, though some rumors and leaks suggest that the consoles will be priced at $499 and $399 respectively.
