President Donald Trump criticised Fox News’ presidential election coverage during a live interview with the network on Tuesday morning, as polls began to open.
Trump’s interview with Fox & Friends, the Fox News morning show, was billed to begin at 7am ET, but it started around 50 minutes late. The show’s hosts offered no explanation for the apparent delay.
The president covered a variety of subjects, including a recent Supreme Court decision on late-arriving ballots, Senator Bernie Sanders and the potential for a Kamala Harris presidency, and he also took aim at Fox News itself.
Trump said Obama was only “drawing flies” and that few people were listening to him. Trump then criticized Fox News for its coverage of Obama’s speeches during the 2020 campaign.
“Fox puts him on more than anybody else, which is sort of shocking to me, cause Fox has changed a lot,” Trump said.
“And somebody said ‘what’s the biggest difference between this and four years ago,’ and I say, ‘Fox.’ It’s much different,” he said.
“You still have great people, you’re three of them,” Trump went on, referring to Kilmeade and his co-hosts Steve Doocy and Ainsley Earhardt. The president continued to speak as Kilmeade talked over him, trying to make a point.
“What they try to do at Fox…” Kilmeade began. “But we just want to show both… unlike the other networks, that we’re trying to show both sides. So hey, here’s President Trump live, here’s Joe Biden live because we feel it’s a responsibility to…”
“We can’t criticize another network,” Earhardt said, before Doocy added: “We report, they decide.”
Kilmeade continued: “So I don’t think it’s an endorsement of anybody. But go ahead. When President Obama speaks, does he get under your skin?”
Trump responded: “They wouldn’t put Sleepy Joe Biden on every time he opened his mouth. They had other networks for that, frankly and it was run… it’s a much different operation. I’m just telling you. It’s much different.”
Trump praised the network’s “incredible people”, name-checking hosts Sean [Hannity], Tucker [Carlson] and Laura [Ingraham], but he pressed his complaint about Fox News.
“But it’s much different,” he said. “I can name some of your side players and you’ll interview… You had a period of time, I think you’re still doing it, but you had Democrats on more than you had Republicans and look, it’s different, and I’m not complaining, I’m just telling people, it’s one of the biggest differences this season compared to the last.”
The interview moved on to other subjects before concluding. Trump has criticized Fox News for what he believes are changes in its approach before, saying things were different under the late Roger Ailes.
