The annual competition, which takes place in São Paulo, Brazil, will see women flaunting their backsides in a bid to win the title of the country’s best bottom.

The first phase of the competition recently kicked off, and will see members of the public voting for their favorite, ultimately whittling down the 27 candidates – who each represent a different state in Brazil – to the just 15. You can vote for your favorite here.

The person who earns the Miss BumBum title will receive 50,000 Brazilian reais (which coverts to about US$22,000) in endorsement deals.

Last year’s winner, Nathy Kihara, 35, made headlines for insuring her backside for just over $1.2 million following the 2021 beauty pageant.

The controversial competition, which was created by journalist and entrepreneur Cacau Oliver in 2011, also received criticism when it got $1.5 million of public funding in 2018, during a time of economic crisis in the country.

The fitness model, athlete, and entrepreneur revealed that her last relationship ended because she decided to participate in the competition.

‘I was dating, and when I decided to participate in Miss BumBum, my ex didn’t accept it. The world is sexist, it’s no use,’ she said.

‘We live in a country where men who call themselves “conservative” beat their women and cheat on them. That to me is not conservatism, it’s a lack of character.’

But the star, who has gained more than 457,000 followers on her Instagram, said she has learned to embrace the ‘pain and suffering’ she has undergone.

She described herself as ‘feisty and resistant,’ and hopes that she can set an example that ‘trans women can get where they want to go’ even if they have to ‘run after it.’ 

‘Winning this contest for me, it’s going to be amazing. First, for being the first trans woman, and for being able to participate on an equal footing with cis women is a dream for me,’ she said.

‘That makes me very, very happy. I don’t necessarily want to win the contest, I want to make history. Yes, a trans woman can get where she wants to go, she just needs to run after it and never give up on her dreams.’

She is representing Rio Grande do Norte.
