George Clooney on Felicity Huffman’s surprise pregnancy before filming The Midnight Sky: ‘Holy s***’

Two-time Oscar winner George Clooney revealed how he reacted after Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, the star of his seventh directorial feature The Midnight Sky, announced she was pregnant.

‘I knew how to answer that, which is, “Congratulations.” But if you saw my face, I’m like, “Holy s***,”‘ the Kentucky-born 59-year-old admitted in Wednesday’s issue of THR Magazine.

‘We started to try to shoot around it, which is always a mistake, because you can’t shoot around it. People know when you’re hiding things. So we just looked at it and said, “Look, they’ve been in space for two years, people have sex. It’s like going on location.”‘

George remembered how the Coen Brothers wrote the hero of their 1996 classic Fargo – Brainerd police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) – as a pregnant woman.

Clooney said: ‘I just thought, like Fran in Fargo, “Women every single day are pregnant, going to work and doing their job, and why not in space and why not just deal with it?”‘

Therefore, the British 37-year-old’s astronaut character Dr. Iris ‘Sully’ Sullivan was re-written undergoing an ultrasound and experiencing morning sickness before a spacewalk.

Felicity went on to welcome her first child – a son – with her director husband Charles Guard last April, which was two months after filming on The Midnight Sky wrapped.

For his role as Arctic scientist Augustine Lofthouse, the five-time Golden Globe winner shed 25lbs and shot scenes in 50mph winds during a blizzard in Iceland.

‘They’ll ask me about being in the snow and they’ll be like, “Was it really hard for you as an actor?” And I’m like, “Yeah, it was hard,”‘ George admitted.

‘But I used to cut tobacco for a living in Kentucky for $3.30 an hour, and I remember watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. You remember that show with whatever his name was [Robin Leach], and they would always talk about how what they were doing was so hard, you hear some famous actor go, “God, it’s so hard. It’s so hard.” And I’m sitting here covered in tobacco juice going, “It’s not that f***ing hard.”‘

‘It’s interesting when you watch him, it feels like, in Ma Rainey, that by the end, you do feel you’re watching an actor saying, “I’m running out of time, I’m going to give it,”‘ George said.

‘He’s probably going to win the Oscar this year. He shouldn’t win it because he died. It’s the best performance of the year, he pours his heart out. And unfortunately, I watched it after he was gone. You’re watching it, your mouth has just dropped open the whole time watching this incredible performance. I just can’t believe the loss.’
