Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) is best friends with her daughter, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). Although that doesn’t mean she’s never offered up some sage advice. During seven seasons of Gilmore Girls (and a Netflix revival), Lorelai passes on some of her wisdom to Rory.

1. Lorelai talks to Rory about love on ‘Gilmore Girls’

When Lorelai learns the reason Rory and Dean (Jared Padalecki) split is that Rory didn’t say “I love you” back to Dean, she talks to her about being vulnerable in a relationship.

It starts out as a sort-of funny conversation about Taylor Hanson — remember the boy band, Hanson? — and ends with Lorelai encouraging Rory to be brave in love.

“I mean, look, I love that you have my eyes and my coffee addiction and my taste in music and movies, but when it comes to love and relationships, I don’t necessarily want you to be like me,” Lorelai tells Rory. “I would hate to think that I raised a kid who couldn’t say I love you.”

2. Lorelai reminds Rory to have fun in college

Lorelai encourages Rory to get the full college experience. When Rory tells her mom she’s not sure about joining in during a party at Yale, Lorelai reminds Rory that there’s more to college than class.

“I just want to make sure that at the end of four years, you’ve not only read every book in the Yale library, you’ve also had some fun,” Lorelai says.

Rory takes her mom’s advice and decides to party it up at Yale. At least until Paris Gellar (Liza Weil) kicks everyone out of their dorm.

3. Lorelai tells Rory to drink responsibly

Any fan of Gilmore Girls knows Rory isn’t a party-goer. She’d rather hang out at home with Lorelai or read a book. So, when she decides to go to Florida over spring break Lorelai’s a little nervous.

As Rory heads off to warmer climates, Lorelai offers her some advice about drinking.

“Don’t drink, and after you’re done not drinking, drink tons of water and take two aspirin before you go to bed,” Lorelai says.

4. Lorelai encourages Rory to talk to her grandparents on ‘Gilmore Girls’

Lorelai is the first person to admit her own relationship with her parents, Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), is anything but great.

In spite of her own history with her parents, she encourages Rory to keep in contact with them.

“I know you and your grandparents are playing the ‘who can freeze out who the longest’ which I know can be fun, but if you ever hope to have a relationship with them, then someone needs to make the first move,” she says.

5. Lorelai tells Rory relationships make people say stupid things

One of Lorelai’s most famous lines from Gilmore Girls happens when she’s talking to Rory about her crush on Dean. Lorelai reassures her getting tongue-tied is going to happen.

“I’m afraid once your heart is involved, it all comes out in moron,” she says.

6. Lorelai reminds Rory sleep is essential on ‘Gilmore Girls’

When Rory’s stressed out about finals and graduating from Chilton, she says she has no time for sleep. Lorelai reminds her that sleep is important.

“You have to sleep, it’s what keeps you pretty,” she says.

Lorelai dishes out a similar piece of advice earlier in the series.

“You’re 16, you should get some sleep and eat a real meal, come up for air every once in a while,” she tells Rory when she’s stressed about Chilton.

These are just a handful of Lorelai’s wisest pieces of advice. She offered up nuggets of information not only to Rory but other characters on Gilmore Girls.
