Harry Styles files a lawsuit against online vendors for selling unauthorised merchandise

Harry Styles filed a lawsuit against unauthorised merchandise sellers in Chicago on Thursday.

The 28-year-old singer’s representatives are taking legal action against online singers in a bid to crackdown on counterfeit products that fans often buy without realising they are not genuine.

The lawsuit stated: ‘Plaintiff is forced to file this action to combat defendants’ counterfeiting of its registered trademarks, as well as to protect unknowing consumers from purchasing counterfeit products over the Internet.’

The items also appear on legitimate market place websites such as Etsy and Amazon and the lawsuit argued they make it ‘difficult for consumers to distinguish such stores from an authorised retailer.’

The former One Direction singer wants all of the listings for the counterfeit items to be removed, with Billboard Pro reporting the lawsuit lists specific URLs rather than actual vendors or people.

It also notes many of the items are from sellers based mostly in China and ‘other foreign jurisdictions with lax trademark enforcement system.’

The suit added: ‘Tactics used by defendants to conceal their identities and the full scope of their operation make it virtually impossible for plaintiff to learn defendants’ true identities and the exact interworking of their counterfeit network.’

The lawsuit doesn’t name the specific sellers in order to stop them attempting to dodge the action.

Harry’s lawyers explained: ‘If defendants were to learn of these proceedings prematurely, the likely result would be the destruction of relevant documentary evidence and the hiding or transferring of assets to foreign jurisdictions.’

The case against specific sites rather than sellers is a tactic that has been used by Nike, Ray-Ban, Toyota and Tommy Hilfiger in recent months.

Harry is on a winning streak after raking in £7million in the past year – thanks to his sell-out worldwide Love On Tour.

The Watermelon Sugar hitmaker, who is still set to perform a number of dates over the coming months, has doubled his current assets in his company account, figures reveal.

Harry’s business Erskine Touring LTD has £12,663,01million in the bank – up from £5.7million last year.

The company raked in just shy of £16million – £3.3million of which was owed to creditors.

And the One Direction star is set to earn even more as the accounts only cover the first six months of his tour, up to March 2022, meaning his earnings from the final 18 months are yet to be added.

It comes as As It Was by Harry was the most listened to single of the year in the UK , according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), based on its analysis of Official Charts Company data.

It was streamed 180.9million times and spent ten consecutive weeks at No1 in the UK and 15 weeks at the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 – a record for a British artist.

Harry has had a busy year and enjoyed major moments in his music and acting careers including releasing his third solo album and topping the charts around the world.

The singer has continued to enjoy great music success, particularly in the US, where he became the first ever soloist to spend at least 15 weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his single As It Was. He’s also been nominated for six Grammy awards.
