The High Wind Warning is in effect now through 7 to 8 p.m. this evening, and covers almost all of Lower Michigan.

A High Wind Warning means wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible in any of the warned area. The warned area is a large one.

High Wind Warning for almost all of Lower Michigan and the eastern part of the U.P. (NOAA)

In any one spot there will be around three hours when a location could have a wind gust as high as 60 mph. Most every location will have at least wind gusts to 50 mph.

The only counties not officially in the High Wind Warning are St. Joseph, Cass and Branch. Don’t expect gusts to be much less than 60 mph in those three counties either.

Here are the peak wind gusts forecasted by my favorite computer model in this situation, the High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR).

Peak wind gust forecast through midnight, November 16, 2020

You can see the strongest gusts are going to occur in south-central and southeast Lower Michigan. Several gusts between 53 mph and 60 mph will be likely for Jackson, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and the Thumb. The west side of Lower Michigan still will have some 45 mph to 50 mph gusts left this afternoon. The immediate Lake Michigan shoreline could have additional gusts to 65 mph.

As of 12:30 p.m., the highest gust reported has been 68 mph at Norton Shores near Muskegon. That strong gust occurred around 12:15 p.m. There has also been a 63 mph gust reported near Grand Rapids. There was also a 65 mph gust measured at the Oakland County Airport in Troy, with the passage of a thunderstorm.

As of 12:45 p.m., the strongest gusts are more widespread in the southwest half of Lower Michigan and moving toward southeast Lower. The strongest gusts in southwest Lower are expected to happen before 3 p.m. The strongest wind gusts over southeast Lower will occur between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Northern Lower Michigan is in the High Wind Warning, but should have gusts staying less than 55 mph.

And then comes the cold air and some accumulating lake effect snow for northwest Lower Michigan.
