Home and Away veteran Ray Meagher reveals how he chose his career over having children… as the 77-year-old is nominated for his second Gold Logie

Home and Away‘s Ray Meagher has revealed why he never had children.

Speaking toThe Daily Telegraph in resurfaced interview, the soap star said he chose not to start a family because of the nature of his acting career.

‘When I was younger as a freelance actor, I wondered whether I’d be able to feed myself let alone anybody else,’ he said.

‘It’s a funny old profession, it’s very precarious, it’s a pretty dodgy old profession employment-wise.’

Ray is a stepfather to his wife Gilly’s daughter Rebecca, who is in her 40s.

He said he enjoys breakfast or lunch with Rebecca once a fortnight and talks to her at least once a week.

Ray was recently left stunned after finding himself nominated for a Gold Logie again at the age of 77.

One of the longest-serving actors in the business, who has appeared in every season of Home and Away since it began in 1988, Ray figured his ‘golden days’ were over after his last big win in 2010.

The star, who has played Alf Stewart for 34 years, shocked the industry that year when he beat a slew of favourites, including Rebecca Gibney and Rove McManus, to win the top prize.

Now he finds himself nominated for the main award again and will go into the June 19 awards ceremony on the Gold Coast as a hot prospect alongside Sonia Kruger and Tom Gleeson.

Julia Morris and Hamish Blake will also contend for the gold statuette.

‘It felt pretty good but it’s also a bit of a surprise,’Ray told TV Week of his nomination, which was announced back on May 15.

‘I sort of thought my golden days were over 12 years ago when I won it.

‘I don’t see myself as a Gold Logie sort of a nominee. There are always plenty of people more deserving.’
