BREAKING NEWS: Republicans kickstart their investigations: House votes to set up panel probing the ‘weaponization’ of the federal government under Biden and a select committee to combat China
- The House voted on the two bills Tuesday as part of the GOP investigations push
- Republicans will look into how Biden administration gathers private information
- China select committee will investigate competition between US and Beijing
House Republicans have signaled their intent to kickstart investigations on Tuesday by establishing a select committee on China and a panel to probe the ‘weaponization’ of the federal government.
GOP lawmakers are vowing to bring accountability to the Biden administration by investigating federal law enforcement agencies, including those that are conducting probes into former President Donald Trump.
Nearly 160 Democrats also voted with Republicans to establish a committee to investigate ‘strategic competition’ between the U.S. and China, in line with the party’s push for a more hardline approach to the Asian nation.
The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government passed the House largely along party lines in a 221-211 vote. It will be under the purview of House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and will look into how the Biden administration and executive branch has gathered information on private citizens.
House Republicans have had a new select committee to investigate China and a select committee to investigate the ‘weaponization’ of the federal law enforcement approved
The panel will look into how government agencies – such as the FBI, Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security – ‘collect, compile, analyze, use, or disseminate information about citizens of the United States, including any unconstitutional, illegal, or unethical activities committed against citizens of the United States.’
On January 2, 2025, the committee will publish a report on their investigation.
The China select committee will be chaired by GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher, a U.S. Marine veteran hand-picked by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
‘You’ll know he’s sacrificed a lot,’ McCarthy said of Gallagher on Tuesday.
‘This is a man who’s focused and studied. This is not a man who is going to make it partisan.’
The creation of the committees is the first of many investigative steps Republicans plan to take as they settle into their slim majority and attempt to serve as a check against President Joe Biden and his agenda on Capitol Hill.
It amounts to a massive reshuffling away from the oversight priorities of Democrats, who used their majority to form a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.
That committee is no more, and Republicans have no plans to revive it, vowing instead to take a closer look at the actions of law enforcement.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy said neither Republicans or Democrats trust China anymore when pushing the select committee on the House floor on Tuesday.
He said: We spent decades passing policies that welcomed China into the global system.
‘In return, China has exported oppression, aggression and anti-Americanism. Today, the power of its military and economy are growing at the expense of freedom and democracy worldwide.
‘It didn’t start under this administration, but the current administration has clearly made it worse.
‘Its policies have weakened our economy and made us more vulnerable to the threat of the CCP.’
