Frozen 3? Idina Menzel says she ‘hopes’ a third installment of the hit Disney franchise will get made so she can voice Elsa again

Idina Menzel would be happy to work on the third Frozen movie.

The 51-year-old Broadway actress told the Today show‘s Jill Martin in an interview that will air on Thursday that she is up for voicing the character of snow princess Elsa once again after working on the first and second Frozen.

When asked if there is a future for Frozen 3, Menzel said, ‘I hope so…I hope it is but I don’t know…any time I can be 80 and play a blonde animated girl whose like 15, whose got amazing arms, by the way, I love that about her.’

The first Frozen came out in 2013 and the second in 2019. Both were smash hit success with the first film making about $1 billion internationally.

Idina’s Frozen costars are Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.

Groff has hinted in the past that a Frozen 3 could happen.

When on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in April he said: ‘I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, Frozen and Mindhunter, I feel like a third Frozen and a third season of Mindhunter are equally possible.’

But Disney has still not announced any plans for a third Frozen movie.

Earlier this month Menzel talked about another franchise. Menzel said she was ‘sad’ that she is too old to star in the Wicked movie.

Thetar originated the leading role of Elphaba in the Broadway musical alongside Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda when it opened back in 2003 and while she is ‘very excited’ that Cynthia Erivo, 35, will be stepping into her shoes for the upcoming movie adaptation alongside pop star Ariana Grande, 28, admitted that she ‘misses’ playing the character of the misunderstood green girl.

She said: ‘The answer is, yes, I’m very excited and I know it’s in great hands and I’ve sent so much love to Cynthia and Ariana and I’m there for them if they need me. And yes, I’m a little sad that I’m just older and can’t play the role, you know? And that’s the honest truth.

‘It’s the aging and the proprietorship of the role and what it means to me and how it changed my life. I just love it, and I miss her, I guess, is what I’m trying to say.’

The actress went on to quip that fellow performer Julie Andrews found herself in a similar situation back in the 1950s when she had originated the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady’ but was overlooked for the big-screen adaptation in favor of Audrey Hepburn before going onto cinematic success herself with Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.

Idina told Broadway.com: ‘Julie Andrews didn’t get to play Eliza in [the film version of] My Fair Lady, right? But then she had ‘The Sound of Music!”

Wicked tells the backstory of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and explains how The Wicked Witch of the West was once best friends with Glinda the Good Witch before society forced them to go their separate ways.

Since opening on Broadway in 2003 and in London’s West End in 2006, the musical has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide and is known for classic songs such as ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘For Good.’

The film adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu and released as a two-parter, the first of which is expected to hit cinemas in 2024.
