Rep. Ilhan Omar fired back at GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy for threatening to remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee over ‘antisemitism’ if he’s elected speaker.

She accused him and his party of using ‘fear, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism’ to target her.

Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and is a member of a liberal group of female lawmakers that Donald Trump dubbed ‘The Squad.’

‘From the moment I was elected, the Republican Party has made it their mission to use fear, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism to target me on the House Floor and through millions of dollars of campaign ads,’ she said in a statement.

‘McCarthy’s effort to repeatedly single me out for scorn and hatred—including threatening to strip me from my committee—does nothing to address the issues our constituents deal with. It does nothing to address inflation, healthcare, or solve the climate crisis.’

She said said the ‘constant stream of hate’ from conservatives has led ‘led to hundreds of death threats and credible plots against me and my family.’ She specificially called out former President Donald Trump and conservative Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

‘Whether it is Marjorie Taylor Greene holding a gun next to my head in campaign ads or Donald Trump threatening to ‘send me back’ to my country (despite the fact that I have been a proud citizen of the United States for more than 20 years), this constant stream of hate has led to hundreds of death threats and credible plots against me and my family,’ Omar said.

McCarthy made his threat against her over the weekend but he would need the approval of a majority of House lawmakers to make such a move.

‘We watch antisemitism grow not just on our campuses, but we watched it grow In the halls of Congress,’ the Republican from California told a crowd at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s 2022 leadership meeting in Las Vegas.

‘You know I made another promise to you last time. There was this congresswoman, Ilhan Omar,’ he said, prompting boos from the crowd. ‘I remember what she said about me. I remember what she said about Israel. I remember what she said about the [U.S.-Israel] relationship. I remembered it so much, I promised you last year she would no longer be on Foreign affairs. I’m keeping that promise.’ The audience cheered.

After Republicans eked out a narrow majority in the House, they elected McCarthy as their leader again last week, despite a challenge from the House Freedom Caucus. He will have to be elected again in January as speaker and he will have to convince many of the 31 who voted against him to change their vote this time around to win a majority in the full House.

McCarthy could not remove Omar from a committee unless a majority of House members voted in favor of doing so, as a Twitter fact check on his claim points out.

McCarthy has also previously promised to reinstate Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s committee assignments after Democrats stripped her of them after a number of incendiary statements. Now, Greene is a vocal McCarthy supporter and has promised to whip her Freedom Caucus colleagues in line behind him.

Since being elected to Congress in 2018, Omar has been accused of antisemitism after a number of statement she’s made. She once said it was ‘all about the Benjamins’ for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and tweeted, ‘We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,’ seeming to equate Israel to Hamas.

McCarthy’s reference to ‘what she said about me’ likely points at when Omar called him ‘a liar and a coward’ after he refused to discipline Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., after she said Omar was a member of the ‘jihad squad,’ joking that she feared Omar, a Somali-American Muslim, carried a bomb.
