Inside Nick Kyrgios and Chiara Passari’s turbulent romance

From ‘soulmates’ to savage texts saying ‘you disgust me’: Inside Nick Kyrgios and Chiara Passari’s turbulent romance – as the tennis star is charged with allegedly assaulting her

  • Nick Kyrgios’ on-off relationship with Chiara Passari lasted more than a year
  • One moment he was showering her with flowers, the next they’d broken up
  • Finally ended things after police were called to a hotel room in Adelaide in 2021
  • Kyrgios was charged on Tuesday with common assault – will face court in August
  • It is understood Kyrgios is accused of grabbing Passari in December last year

Nick Kyrgios‘ rollercoaster romance with Chiara Passari made headlines from the moment it began – in June 2020, when the tennis star returned to his hometown of Canberra during the Covid pandemic.

Their on-off relationship lasted more than a year and fluctuated wildly between explosive text message exchanges – invariably shared on social media – to intimate photos shot during lavish tropical island getaways.

One moment he was calling the model, 23, his ‘soulmate’ while showering her with wine and flowers for Valentine’s Day, the next week they’d broken up and Kyrgios, 27, was telling her to enjoy ‘living in Canberra the rest of your life’.

The pair seemed to end things for good in October 2021 when police were called to a loud lover’s quarrel at The Playford Hotel in Adelaide – where they were in quarantine together after returning from a trip abroad.

They were placed in separate hotel rooms and no charges were laid, however, their relationship woes were far from over.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that Kyrgios will face ACT Magistrate’s Court on August 2 in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021.

It is understood Kyrgios is accused of grabbing Passari in an alleged incident in December last year. If found guilty, he faces a maximum of up to two years in jail.

Hours after the allegations surfaced, the tennis World No.40 pulled up to practice in Wimbledon ahead of his match against Chile’s Cristian Garin on Wednesday for a spot in the Grand Slam’s semi-final.

Rumours of Kyrgios’ romance with Passari began in June 2020 – following his high-profile split with Russian player, Anna Kalinskaya, in March that year.

The tennis star started posting photos of the brunette in a series of now-deleted Instagram posts, telling fans ‘happiness is found’ and calling Passari ‘my queen’.

‘Imagine having a best friend, falling in love with them and going through the fire together… hand in hand. Imagine that. My universe. My $oulmate. Till infinity,’ he wrote.

In an interview with Today hosts Karl Stefanovic and Alison Langdon in August 2020, Kyrgios said he was ‘incredibly happy’ and ‘lucky enough to have met her’.

‘Moving forward, I’m happy with her,’ he said.

The pair shared loved-up photos as they welcomed in 2021 on New Year’s Eve with friends in Canberra – looking adoringly into each other’s eyes, arms wrapped around the other.

On February 2, Passari uploaded a cryptic Instagram post that read, ‘Cheaters always want you to be loyal while they’re being unfaithful’ – though it is unclear as to whether she was referring to Kyrgios.

Two weeks later, on Valentine’s Day, Kyrgios posted a photo of his girlfriend laying on a bed with a bunch of red roses and a bottle of wine.

‘Happy Valentine’s b,’ he wrote, with a series of heart emojis.

‘Chiara Passari, I love you.’

Passari later responded: ‘There will always be struggles but as long as that magic and those unforgettable experiences are there it’s all worth it. Happy belated Valentine’s. I love you.’

Little more than a week later, things took another ugly turn.

Passari posted a screenshot of a troubling text message exchange, during which Kyrgios said ‘you disgust me’ and told her to ‘be in Canberra the rest of your life’.

The woman responded, ‘I’m sorry you hate yourself,’ and they deleted each other on social media.

In March that year, they were seen side-by-side at Sydney Airport while waiting for a flight to Canberra – $5,000 designer suitcases in tow.

The following month, they climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge together.

In July, they were pictured kissing passionately in a pool during a holiday in the Bahamas – her legs wrapped around the sportsman’s waist.

But their doomed romance peaked on October 7, when police were called to an heated argument between the couple at a quarantine hotel room in Adelaide.

Their dispute began when Ms Passari accused Kyrgios of cheating on her, and shared a photo to Instagram purporting to show him in bed with a ‘naked girl’.

She then shared a photo of a shirtless and sleeping Kyrgios, adding the caption: ‘That girl naked in bed with him isn’t me by the way… Hope that clears it up.’

The social media drama resulted in a ‘verbal argument’ between the pair in their hotel suite, with police eventually forced to separate them into different rooms.

In a series of texts Ms Passari posted on Instagram, the pair agreed to stop living together.

‘Can you get your stuff out my house?’ one message read, while another suggested a shared laptop would have to be returned.

In December, Kyrgios announced he was in a relationship with Sydney blogger Costeen Hatzi – to which Passari said she didn’t expect their relationship to last.

Passari also made a series of wild allegations about Kyrgios, 26, and posted screenshots of heated text messages they allegedly sent each other after their fight (pictured)

She said her ex-boyfriend moves on quickly because he is ‘afraid to be alone’, and claimed the tennis star only stopped texting her ‘about feelings’ a few weeks prior to dating Hatzi.

On Sunday, two days before he was charged on Tuesday, Kyrgios gushed about how he was ‘obsessed’ with Hatzi.

‘I’ve got an incredible support crew. My physio is one of my best friends. My best friend is my agent. I’ve got the best girlfriend in the world,’ he told reporters.

He said he often was stuck to his phone reading comments about his performance following big matches, but with Ms Hatzi, 22, by his side he could ‘switch off’.

‘When you get a result like this it’s so easy to be attached to technology – seeing everyone’s opinions on the match or highlights, everything like that,’ he said.

‘But I feel like I’m really able to switch off from that. And that’s a big part of my growth.

‘Obviously being obsessed with my girlfriend helps, but I’m just able to let that go and enjoy my dinner and wake up the next day and separate tennis and life.’

Leaving the practice courts shortly after the allegations surfaced on Tuesday, Kyrgios told waiting reporters he ‘felt like he was in The Last Dance’ – referring to the 2020 documentary about basketball legend Jordan.

The tennis star also posted to Instagram, urging his 2.3 million followers to ‘believe in themselves’.

‘This is why I play. To all my youngsters out there, believe in yourself,’ he wrote alongside a photo captured of an adoring young fan at Wimbledon.

Ms Hatzi, who has been cheering on her boyfriend from the crowd as he plays at Wimbledon, left a series of emojis in the comment section which Kyrgios responded to with a single love-heart.

On Tuesday, he attended practice as normal just minutes after the assault allegations came to light – although he chose to train on the court furthest away from waiting media.

‘ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,’ police said earlier that evening.

Kyrgios’s barrister Jason Moffett, from Key Chambers, told The Canberra Times his client was aware of the allegations, which were ‘in the context of a domestic relationship’.

‘The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously,’ he added.

‘Given the matter is before the court… he doesn’t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we’ll issue a media release.’
